Board Chair and Board of Trustees At HelpAge International

Join us to inspire a movement to promote the rights, voice and well-being of older people globally.

HelpAge International is a global non-profit organisation that works to improve the lives of older people around the world. We work through the HelpAge global network, an alliance of organisations committed to the wellbeing, dignity and voice of older people. We amplify the voices of older people, enhancing their ability to claim their rights, to make choices and to participate meaningfully in decision-making in all parts of their lives, including the personal, family, social and political. By supporting older people to be their own champions, we also help them to challenge ageism and inequality.

The world’s population is expected to reach 10 billion by 2050. The rapid growth of one demographic, in particular, is driving this – older people. Today’s over 60s are the fastest growing population group in the world and are predicted to double to more than 2 billion by 2050, or 1 in 5 of the global population with the majority of these in lower and middle-income countries

The contribution that older people make to society is invaluable, yet some remain the poorest and most neglected groups of people in the world. We are a progressive and dynamic organisation that is having a transformational impact on the lives of older people throughout the world.

Our ten-year strategy, launched in 2020 – provides an organisational roadmap that will continue to guide us going forward. Shaped by our core focus areas, our strategy underscores our commitment to locally-led development which embraces localisation and partner-led programming as HelpAge champions the shift of power to local network members and partners. Globally relevant but, locally shaped, our strategy will enable us to build on our history of championing older people, but in a better way. Our newly appointed Chief Executive, Cherian Mathews, has supported the organisation to amplify its impact in his previous roles, and he is committed to finding new ways to empower those we work with as local partners and network members in a bid to unleash their full potential.

We are looking for a Chair with the energy, vision, and genuine commitment to help ensure the charity remains at the cutting edge of the sector to address the opportunities and challenges posed by population ageing. The Chair should have a strategic focus, governance and leadership experience, and strong collaborative skills, to work with a globally diverse and high-performing Board. As Chair, you will display exceptional leadership qualities and collegiality to ensure that our Board provides the right blend of support and challenge to the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Team.

Our Board requires Trustees with strong strategic leadership experience in an international setting, whether in NGOs, business, foundations, or other relevant sectors. Core skillsets in fundraising and business development, international development, finance and audit, communications, strategic planning, advocacy, technology, governance, and risk management are highly desirable. We are keen to continue to be an inclusive Board and to ensure we have representatives from across the globe, including in particular from Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, Africa and North America.

Trustees are expected to dedicate sufficient time to the role. This includes attending two Board meetings per year (including one face-to-face meeting in a country where we have a local partner) and participating on at least one subcommittee (more information about the time commitment is available in the Chair and Trustee job descriptions).

The position of Trustee is voluntary but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. HelpAge International is headquartered in London but operates globally with staff located around the world.
