Watch Canada Put U.S On Probation List As They Close Borders To Non Citizens. Canada’s PM Justin Trudeau’s wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau tested positive for coronavirus last Thursday.
Today CNBC says that because of the pandemic, Canada will close its doors to non-citizens, with U.S. citizens “for now” excluded.
CNBC reports that Canada is closing its doors to non-citizens as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau clarified that the ban is “for the time being” not applicable to US citizens.
“We can still slow the spread of this virus,” Trudeau said at a press conference at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, where he announced the border closing.
“It is time to take every precaution to keep people safe.”
Canada will make some exceptions to the border closure. And the ban does not affect the shipment of goods into the country.
The announcement by Trudeau came hours after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a ban on non-essential, incoming foreign travel within the European Union for one month.
“We will be denying entry to Canada to people who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents,” Trudeau said.
“This measure will carve out some designated exceptions, including for air crews, diplomats, immediate family members of Canadian citizens and, at this time, U.S. citizens.”
Trudeau said the exception was justified for U.S. citizens because of “the level of integration between our two economies.” “I know these measures are far-reaching. They are situations of exception, calling for extraordinary measures,” he added.
