Organizational framework

The main objective of FAO country offices, headed by an FAO Representative, is to help governments develop policies, programs and projects to achieve food security and reduce hunger and malnutrition, help develop the agricultural, fisheries, forestry sectors and use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable way.

This vacancy is part of the project approved by the Green Climate Fund “ Chile REDD-plus Payment by Results period 2014-2016 ” that FAO, in association with the National Forestry Corporation of Chile ( CONAF ), will execute to increase resilience of ecosystems and the native forest, and contribute to mitigating climate change in Chile. The project will contribute to the reduction of social, environmental and economic vulnerability generated by climate change, desertification, land degradation and drought, in forests and local communities that depend on them in 6 regions of the country ( Maule, Biobío, Ñuble, Araucanía, Los Ríos and Los Lagos ).

Technicians represent an important source of expertise for FAO and make their expert contributions around the world to achieve the Organization’s strategic objectives. To enable FAO to attract and employ the best possible experts in the wide range of technical areas of its mandate, a competitive selection process has been introduced.

Hierarchical dependency

Under the general supervision of the National Coordinator of the project, the direct supervision of the Technical Assistant of the Project in FAO and with the technical advice of the head of the department of forests and regional climate change and the regional manager of CONAF nurses, region of La Araucanía.

Field of specialization

The nurseryman’s objective is to support the strategic functions of the Imperial Nursery, in order to promote the production of plants, preferably native, which will be destined for the + Forests Project financed by the Green Climate Fund within the framework of the ENCCRV and the REDD + approach, ensuring the achievement of the objectives and goals proposed in accordance with the policies and regulations established by the FAO, the Green Climate Fund and the State of Chile and the generation of environmental, economic and social co-benefits for vulnerable groups defined in the ENCCRV, through the implementation of the action measures of the ENCCRV.

Your workplace will be at the conaf Imperial nursery, in the Nueva Imperial Commune, La Araucanía region, and you must be available to go out into the field frequently inside or outside the region.

Tasks and responsibilities

  •  Produce and maintain adequate quantity and quality of forest species associated with the project.
  •  Collaborate in the collection, cleaning and storage of seeds.
  •  Collaborate in the collection and propagation of vegetative material of native and exotic species of the region.
  •  Support the production of native plants of different species.
  •  Collaborate in the processes of sowing, vegetative reproduction and cultural management of the conaf imperial nursery.
  •  Carry out irrigation and maintenance (weeding and order) of the plants in production.
  •  Support general operational activities related to the project.
  •  Collaborate with the safeguarding and adequate maintenance of goods and supplies in general, associated with the project.

CANDIDATES WILL BE EVALUATED ACCORDING TO THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

Minimum requirements

  •  Educational level of basic education.
  •  Verifiable experience of at least 1 year in issues related to work in nurseries and plant production.
  •  Spanish proficiency (level C).
  •  National of Chile. Residence in the commune of New Imperial, Region of La Araucanía.

Selection criteria

  •  Demonstrable experience in plant production and/or forest seed collection. Demonstrable experience in the production of native plants will be applicable.
  •  Proven ability to perform teamwork
  •  Availability to go out into the field both inside and outside the Araucanía region.
  •  Immediate availability.
  •  Availability to execute shifts on weekends, especially in the summer, depending on the needs of the orchard and nursery.
  •  Experience in sowing, surveying and collecting native and exotic seeds from the Araucanía region.
  •  Verifiable experience in the production and management of native and exotic plants from the Araucanía region.
  •  Verifiable training in plant production, through vegetative reproduction and sowing, etc.
  •  Knowledge of native species of the La Araucanía region.
  •  Availability to support the activities of the conaf Imperial nursery
