Since 2019, UNDP has been implementing a two-phase stabilization project in the Lake Chad Basin region for the benefit of the four countries in the region (Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria). The first phase ended in August 2021 and the second phase, an extension of the first, covers the period September 2021 to August 2024. This initiative, implemented through Dakar Regional Hub, responds to the need to stabilize the region, which is facing a major security and development challenge due to Boko Haram terrorist attacks. The Liptako Gourma region, which has also been plagued by terrorist attacks for more than a decade, also benefits from a similar project, including a stabilization facility after a pilot phase. The region shared by Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger is living to the rhythm of terrorism attacks. The Liptako Gourma Stabilisation Facility complements development interventions in fragile areas implemented under the Alliance for the Sahel. The overall objective of these projects is to reduce the risk of violence in the target areas in order to enable the implementation of longer-term peacebuilding, recovery and development programmes. These projects aim to stop the spiral of insecurity, forced displacement and conflict and to strengthen social cohesion. They are structured around the following axes, while gender is being mainstreamed through all of them:The promotion of security and justice;Strengthening Infrastructure for Essential Social Services ;Creating Livelihood Opportunities ; Promoting peace ;Strengthening cross-border cooperation

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the different team members , the interns are expected to perform the following tasks: Support with the monitoring of the programme implementation of the 2 Regional Stabilization Facilities. Support with drafting progress reports, concept notes and terms of reference (inter-agency) meeting minutes, as well as proofreading technical documents and knowledge products on for the Team.

  •  Conduct research in the thematic priority areas that is determined jointly by the supervisor and the intern (e.g. promotion of security and justice, Promoting peace, socio economic recovery, environment, gender, cross-border cooperation change among others);
  •  Assist in preparing reports, proofread and provide feedback;
  •  Support the team in carrying out ongoing activities on specific thematic or field;
  •  Conducting the research on the best practices in the priority thematic areas determined by the supervisor;
  •  Support the UNDP team in developing infographics related to the various data analysis results;
  •  Support the UNDP team in developing knowledge products;
  •  Provide support to the RSF’s seminars, workshops, conferences, where applicable.

Learning Elements During the assignment, the intern will gain experience in:

  •  Drafting and preparation of reports and minutes;
  •  Programme Management at a regional level, and understanding its complexities
  •  Hands-on planning and implementation of stabilization programmes, and different area s of intervention of the Regional Stabilization Facility;
  •  Awareness-raising on different field of expertise in the Regional Stabilization Facility activities.
  •  Programme implementation in the field of Gender, M&E, Conflict sensitivity, cross border activities……in the context of multi-country programmes

Competencies

Attention to details and proven ability to work independently and effectively with minimum supervision; 4. Networking skills to engage with key internal and external partners; 5. Required Skills and Experience

Education: Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent); (c) Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation; (d) Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this program.

Experience: No required

Language : Fluency in written and spoken French or English. And knowledge of the other language

Interns’ Expenses/Arrangements: 1. Interns may be given a stipend under conditions prescribed in the section on stipends, below. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, passports, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern. 2. Interns are responsible for securing adequate medical insurance for the duration of their internship with UNDP and must provide a medical certificate of good health prior to starting the internship. UNDP will not reimburse the medical insurance of the intern. Any costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship assignment will be the responsibility of the intern. 3. Selected candidates for internships must show proof of valid medical insurance for the duty station in which they will intern. Applicants that are neither nationals nor residents of the duty station, the insurance must include adequate coverage in the event of an injury or illness during the internship duration which: (a) Requires transportation to the home country or country of residence for further treatment; (b) Results in death and requires preparation and return of the remains to the home country, or country of residence.

Subsequent Employment: The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship Only those candidates who are shortlisted will be contacted for interview. Before being offered a Letter of Acceptance for Internship, the selected candidate will have to provide the following additional documents:

  •  A Medical Certificate of Good Health from a recognized physician. If the intern is expected to travel outside the country of their residence, other than to Europe and North America, the physician must indicate whether s/he is for to travel and has the required inoculations for the country to which they are to travel;
  •  Proof of both Medical and Life Insurance cover valid for the duration of the internship programme.
