Hierarchical dependency

The specialist in atmospheric surveillance and agrometeorological forecasting will be under the general supervision of the Assistant Representative Programs ( AFAORP ) of FAO El Salvador, and the technical supervision of the coordination of the RECLIMA project and the Directorate of the Observatory of Threats and Natural Resources ( DOA ) of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources ( MARN ).

Atmospheric surveillance and agrometeorological forecast; survey, analysis and systematization of information.

Tasks and responsibilities

  •  Verification of sensors of meteorological stations in the Municipality of San Miguel.
  •  Support to validate the climatological observations made in meteorological stations in the Municipality of San Miguel, Gotera, Perquín, Santiago de Maria and La Unión.
  •  Jointly analyze satellite spatial information with DOA-MARN technical personnel
  •  Numerical modeling analysis with emphasis on the dry corridor area east area for the forecast of rain and wind.
  •  Participate in daily virtual meetings for the technical discussion of atmospheric conditions from DOA-MARN to generate forecasts.
  •  Collaborate in the daily analysis of the meteorological parameters registered in the meteorological stations that are in the project areas for the generation of farmer understanding bulletins.
  •  Prepare agrometeorological forecasts every 10 days that include wind, extreme temperatures and precipitation.
  •  Comparison of conventional, automatic station data and generation of statistics from existing records.
  •  Weather data rescue
  •  Support for meteorological observations
  •  Generation of modeling of water requirements of crops for basic grains
  •  Provide support to other tasks required under FAO El Salvador’s multitask approach.

THE CANDIDATES WILL BE EVALUED IN ARRANGE TO THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

Minimum requirements

  •  University degree in Meteorology, degree in Physics, Geophysics, Environmental Sciences, Agronomic Engineering, or related areas.
  •  5 years of relevant experience in the development of agroclimatic forecasts, collection, verification and analysis of information from the current information systems available at the national level.
  •  Spanish language proficiency ( C level ) and limited knowledge of the English language ( A level ).
  •  National of El Salvador or resident with work permit.

  •  Demonstrated ability ( through publications in Spanish ) to produce analyzes of agroclimatic information;
  •  Verifiable knowledge of survey, verification, analysis of forecasts for decision-making of small producers;
  •  Skills to function in various contexts ( urban, rural, multicultural, etc. );
  •  Advanced computer management in MS Windows environment and MS Office platform;
  •  Writing skills;
  •  Availability to travel nationally.
