Overview: The Field Monitor will play a crucial role in collecting qualitative and quantitative data for humanitarian projects in one or more sectors such as WASH, Nutrition, Health, Child Protection, Education, or Supply. The incumbent will be responsible for conducting field visits, interviews, surveys, and assessments to gather data and information on project implementation, impact, and outcomes. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in social sciences, research methods, or a related field, along with a minimum of 3 years of experience in data collection for humanitarian projects. Experience in using mobile data collection tools and fluency in English and French languages are desirable. Nationals from the country of operation are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties/Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct field visits to project sites to collect qualitative and quantitative data through interviews, focus group discussions, observations, and surveys.
  • Administer data collection tools and instruments in accordance with project guidelines and protocols, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and completeness of data.
  • Liaise with project staff, partners, and community members to facilitate data collection activities and ensure cooperation and participation.
  • Compile and organize collected data in electronic or paper format, and submit it to the relevant authorities or project teams within specified deadlines.
  • Assist in the analysis and interpretation of collected data, and contribute to the preparation of reports, presentations, and other deliverables as required.
  • Ensure compliance with ethical standards and data protection protocols in all aspects of data collection and management.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations to project teams based on field observations and findings, to support program planning, implementation, and monitoring.
  • Participate in training sessions and capacity building activities to enhance skills and knowledge in data collection methodologies and tools.
  • Maintain regular communication with project teams and supervisors to provide updates on field activities, challenges, and achievements.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in social sciences, research methods, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in qualitative and quantitative data collection for humanitarian projects in one or more sectors such as WASH, Nutrition, Health, Child Protection, Education, or Supply.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in using mobile data collection tools.
  • Fluency in English and French languages is desirable.
  • Nationals from the country of operation are preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to be mobile and agile at a moment’s notice in case of an emergency required.
  • Ability and willingness to work for extended periods in insecure and diverse environments.
  • Ability and willingness to safely enter and exit a larger, armored SUV vehicle that is several feet off the ground without assistance, while wearing body armor and/or a heavy flak jacket.
  • In case of an emergency situation, must be able and willing to “duck and seek cover”, which may require the individual to exit the vehicle, unaided, and hurriedly seek shelter elsewhere, as needed, in the event of a roadside emergency.

Education: Bachelor’s degree, preferably in social sciences, research methods, or a related field.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with humanitarian principles, standards, and guidelines related to data collection and monitoring.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders, including community members, project staff, and partners.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging and dynamic environments.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in data collection and reporting.
  • Ability to travel to remote and/or conflict-affected areas as required for field visits and data collection activities.

Physical Requirements: This is largely a sedentary position that requires the ability to speak, hear, see, and lift small objects up to 20 lbs.

Supervisory Responsibility: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Travel: International travel may be required and may include travel to fragile and/or conflict-prone zones.
