Duties andResponsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The UN-REDD is the UN’s knowledge and advisory platform on forest solutions to the climate crisis. It is a UN flagship partnership, composed of three agencies – FAO, UNDP and UNEP – that work together to assist countries in implementing the Paris Agreement, particularly Articles 5 and 6. UN-REDD strives to reduce deforestation, promote sustainable land uses, advance international cooperative approaches to climate mitigation and mobilize climate finance to turn the tide on tropical deforestation. Since its inception in 2008, the UN-REDD Programme has built unparalleled expertise in the form of lessons learned, good practices, and proven methodologies. Having produced and maintained the leading repository of REDD+ readiness knowledge, going forward the Programme will put a strong emphasis on its core strength of being a knowledge broker and catalytic convener, connecting producers of REDD+ knowledge with users of knowledge in innovative ways in order to quickly scale up REDD+ financing, implementation and impact. Instead of delivering a series of stand-alone products (events, publications, webpages) covering a plethora of topics, the Programme will pivot towards an approach where (i) annual thematic priorities will guide all outputs, (ii) Capacity Development and Knowledge Management (CDKM) outputs are connected, coherent and sequenced and (iii) UN-REDD’s CDKM work links to the knowledge of partners outside of the Programme. In addition, the UN-REDD led Green Gigaton Challenge, a new transformative undertaking aimed at sending the necessary market signal in order to kick start a high-quality carbon market supported by the highest UN echelon, will require extensive CDKM results deliveries. Duties and responsibilities As part of its Knowledge Management (KM) efforts in 2023-2025, the UN-REDD Programme requires to regularly update and implement the Knowledge Management strategy, including the application of best practices for the creation, management, and dissemination of lessons learned, organization of South-South and regional knowledge and peer-to-peer learning exchanges, facilitation of knowledge briefs, maintenance of the Programme’s online knowledge repository. To this end, the UN-REDD Programme has established a Theory of Breakthrough, which builds on the idea of an intrinsically linked three-step knowledge journey from knowledge generation to knowledge distribution and knowledge-based advocacy. In this knowledge value chain, not one step is more important than the other. Only their interconnectedness enables the Programme to deliver. The Programme requires hiring an expert for this role with specific knowledge management expertise. The consultant will be responsible for the delivery of approaches for knowledge creation, management, and sharing across the three partner agencies and 65 partner countries to contribute to enhancing the scope and speed of REDD+ progress. This position is home-based, under the overall supervision of the CMU/UN-REDD KM & Comms Global Team Leader. The consultant will perform the following tasks: 1. Create the annual workplan for KM including deliverables that are aligned to UN-REDD’s results framework and the regional plans and in coordination with UNEP’s technical teams and FAO and UNDP’s KM focal points and contribute to its execution. 2. Develop and maintain a vibrant UN-REDD Finance community of practice, by creating a content and engagement strategy, producing engaging content, create agendas, scripts and exchange dynamics for meetings, and moderating dialogues, in collaboration with technical Programme staff. 3. Evaluate and maintain the knowledge repository, country pages and library of UN-REDD website, including sourcing, editing, quality-assuring tags and descriptions, of knowledge products. 4. Created and maintain a stakeholder database for UN-REDD, tagged according to stakeholder groups and populated with partner intelligence (key priorities of partners, needs analysis, analytics etc). 5. Implement and sensitize colleagues on workflows for KM processes and products such as webinars, Brown Bag Lunches-, team meetings and publications; from ideation, production, dissemination, knowledge capture, monitoring, and evaluation. 6. Asses, evaluate and provide the development of the inter-agency work planning activities, interagency calls and interagency knowledge exchanges, creating an agenda, proposing dialogue and exchange dynamics and moderation knowledge capture, and M&E processes. 7. Develop and implement M&E processes to demonstrate an annual increase of 10% in beneficiaries that have accessed knowledge products and events and annual target constituencies that have accessed UN-REDD knowledge. 8. Provide KM advice and guidance to UN-REDD Programme on knowledge management, facilitation, community management, content management and event management, as requested and provide a report on areas of improvement.
