In January 2024, War Child has formed an alliance – the international body that manages War Child’s activities across the world. The War Child Alliance is a global network of child protection actors working to safeguard and educate children living with violence and armed conflict. The Alliance includes War Child organisations from the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Sweden, Children in Conflict in the US, and implementing offices in 14 conflict affected countries.

The Challenge
War Child Alliance is looking for a strong and inspiring Head of Institutional Funding & Grants Delivery (IFGD) who will provide strategic leadership to achieve sustainable growth and effective management of funding from institutional donors, large trusts and foundations. The goal is to strengthen external strategic partnerships and an effective interdependent model for institutional funding across the decentralised organisation.
During this exciting time, you will bring new ideas and develop and implement new strategy and establish effective ways of working and strengthen capabilities of the War Child Alliance’s fundraising members, regional and country offices.
The Head of Institutional Funding & Grants Delivery will lead the Institutional Funding & Grants Delivery team which consists of strategic partnerships, quality assurance, process improvement, and proposal development specialists. The Head of Institutional Funding & Grants Delivery will report to the Director of Programme Implementation & Institutional Funding and is part of the related programme team.
Key Responsibilities
- Achieving sustainable growth by ensuring high standards in business development and grants delivery and by strengthening organisational capacity in institutional funding partnerships and across the grants management cycle.
- Leading the expansion of War Child’s funding portfolio and increasing & strengthening relations with relevant networks, strategic partners and stakeholders that greatly contribute to the roll-out of WCA strategy.
- Leading the development and delivery of an ambitious institutional funding strategy for the Alliance, that has clear and concrete IFGD goals, ensures targets are defined and achieved and results in the expansion of a large and diverse pipeline.
- Working with Alliance Fundraising Members to explore new markets for institutional funding and develop capabilities across the War Child network to raise funds from priority new markets.
- Contributing to positioning War Child as a specialist networked organization towards donors and (potential) fundraising partners and develop strategic partnerships.
- Leading development of grants management processes that are efficient, enable effective decision-making, and support decentralisation and localisation.
- Leading reforming of IFGD processes so that they are fit for purpose for the new Alliance.
- Leading and managing the IFGD team, coaching and developing a collection of skilled and experienced individuals to achieve clear and ambitious goals, providing support to Alliance members, country, regional and global teams to build their institutional funding & grants delivery capability.
Your Profile
- Significant experience and understanding of international development/humanitarian/child rights.
- Knowledge and understanding of (institutional) donor networks and extensive experience of senior-level institutional donor engagement, such as with EC, ECHO, UN, USAID, USAID, NL and UK MFA/FCDO, international foundations etc.
- Expert level of understanding and analytical skills of, and the application of sector and thematic trends in funding mechanisms.
- Demonstrated expertise in institutional funding strategy development and its operationalisation.
- At least 5 years’ experience in grant cycle management, donor account management, and developing high value strategic partnerships.
- Knowledge and experience in or supervision of business process design.
- At least 5 years’ experience of managing, overseeing or delivering international development and/or humanitarian programmes in developing and/or conflict-affected countries.
- Substantial experience of successful advocacy with institutional donors.
- Extensive experience of remote management and coordinating work remotely.
- Proven leadership, line management and people management skills, including identifying talent, managing performance, supporting individual development, and creating a high performing team.
- Demonstrable negotiation, influencing and relationship-building skills; confidence in dealing with people at all levels and ability to influence senior management, as well as external partners and agencies.
- A relevant network in the sector.
- Commitment to the aims and objectives of War Child.
- Educated to degree level
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and preferably one of the following languages: Dutch, French, Arabic and/or Spanish.
- Willing and able to travel, including to War Child programming areas.
Our Offer
- An employment contract with one of the offices where War Child is based
- The following offer is based on a Dutch employment contract, actually conditions depend on the local office
- Salary range from € 4982 – € 6194 gross per month, based on 40 hours per week (the exact step determined by the years of relevant working experience).
- 28 vacation days on full time basis (consisting of 26 vacation days plus 2 additional fixed free days, based on 40 hours work week).
- A pension scheme fully paid by War Child.
- Compensation for travel and work from home costs.
- Laptop to work from any location and monthly mobile phone contribution of € 25.
