Doctors with Africa CUAMM (CUAMM) is an International NGO which has been working in Tanzania for more than 50 years for the health system strengthening in order to protect and improve the well-being and health of vulnerable communities. The Organisation has a strong track record on healthcare projects from the demand side (community, referral system, antenatal care) to delivery of services (improving quality in health centers, hospitals etc..). CUAMM focuses on designing health system strengthening projects, with particular attention to the needs of women and children, and tailored to the specific needs of the countries where the organization carries out projects. Through its evidence-based approach, CUAMM works to remove the barriers preventing communities from accessing health services, and to improve the quality of the same services, to achieve accessible, quality and equitable healthcare for everyone.

CUAMM is long-standing partner of Tosamaganga Voluntary Agency Hospital (Tosamaganga Hospital) to improve the overall management of the Hospital and ensure quality of care and equity of access for mothers, newborns and children.

Tosamaganga Hospital is a private not for profit facility. The hospital has a capacity of 192 beds distributed as follows: Medical wards (80 beds), Maternity ward (52), Paediatric ward (31), Surgical ward (18) with one major operating theatre, and Neonatal Unit (11). Moreover, the outpatient department includes Adult and Child clinic, Reproductive and Child Health (RCH), the Care and Treatment Centre (CTC), the TB unit, the Dental Unit, the Emergency and the minor operating theatre. The Laboratory and Radiology departments provide lab tests, x-rays, ultrasounds and CT scans. In 2023, the hospital offered 43,550 outpatient visits, 8,874 admissions, of which 3,819 in Obstetric/Gynaecological department. Additionally, the Hospital registered around 3.200 deliveries and 750 admissions in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Job position: Gynaecologist
Location: Tosamaganga Hospital, Iringa Region

Duration: 12 months, with possible renewal at the end of the period based on the professional and personal performance

Objectives of the job position:
1. Ensuring the regular function of the Obstetric/Gynaecological department, providing the due consultancy to guarantee adequate activities’ organization and coordination.
2. Improving the quality of care of obstetric and gynaecological cases, providing capacity building of the staff working in the department, tutoring activity of the national and expatriate residents, preparing and introducing guidelines and protocols of management of the most frequent obstetric conditions.

Specific tasks and activities:
The achievement of the objectives will imply at least the following tasks and activities. These activities will be defined and carried out in agreement with the CUAMM Hospital Technical Advisor and the Director of Clinical Services of Tosamaganga Hospital.

Objective 1:

  • The Gynaecologist is in charge of the Obstetric/Gynaecological Department, daily organising, coordinating and supervising the overall activity;
  • The Gynaecologist will regularly chair the Ward Rounds, together with the other Doctors assigned to the Department and will oversee the clinical and surgical activity;
  • The Gynaecologist will proactively attend the morning meeting of the Hospital staff;
  • The Gynaecologist will conduct twice per week the Obstetric and Gynaecological Clinic;
  • The Gynaecologist will systematically interact with Paediatrician/Neonatologist in the management of complicated deliveries in the delivery Room and Major Theatre;
  • The Gynaecologist will be a formal member of the Hospital Management Team (HMT) and will participate to the respective meetings;
  • The Gynaecologist will supervise the appropriate utilisation of the Hospital software (E-Medical) for patients’ management and data collection. He/She will also facilitate data sharing and analysis.

Objective 2:

  • The Gynaecologist is responsible for the introduction of adequate standards and guidelines in the Maternity Department, according to National Guidelines for obstetric and neonatal care.
  • The Gynaecologist will fully play the role of Tutor of the national and expatriate Residents (post-degree students), organising and coordinating their training experience appraising their performance and skills and, when requested, supporting their operational research. These activities include: i) supervision of daily rounds in the Maternity Department; ii) training in labour room; iii) review meeting every two weeks to discuss specific clinical cases; iv) attendance in surgical room to perform and lead at least for surgical interventions as first operator with the trainees.
  • The Gynaecologist will be responsible for theoretical and practical trainings on the topics of maternal and neonatal care, both for hospital staff and for staff of peripheral health facilities.
  • The Gynaecologist will chair the maternal audits.
  • The Gynaecologist will chair, together with Paediatrician/Neonatologist, the monthly perinatal audit.
  • The Gynaecologist will coordinate and supervise specific operational research activities, if requested.

Required specifications and experience:

  • Education/training: University degree in medicine and completed specialization in obstetrics and gynaecology
  • General professional experience: at least 3 years of professional clinical experience in gynaecology in hospital related settings
  • Languages: C1 language skills in English and Kiswahili
  • Other: IT literacy (MS Office, Windows, ability to use digital health information systems)

The Gynaecologist will report to:
Director of Clinical Services of Tosamaganga Hospital (First Supervisor)
CUAMM Project Manager and Hospital Technical Advisor (Second Supervisor)
CUAMM Country Manager (Third Supervisor)

Pay and benefits:
The pay range for this position at the commencement of employment is expected to be between TZS 3,500,000 and TZS 5,000,000 monthly net. The starting salary offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market for the position, job-related knowledge, skills and experience. CUAMM also covers accommodation costs in one independent house close to the Tosamaganga Hospital compound.
