Job Description

The Position:

The Communications Analyst is located in the Cox’s Bazar sub-office and reports to the UNFPA Head of Sub Office, Cox’s Bazar.

Job Purpose:

The Communications Analyst is the focal point for advocacy media and communication activities in the UNFPA Bangladesh Cox’s Bazar Office. He/she provides substantive inputs to media, communication and advocacy aspects of project formulation, planning and implementation.

He/she works collaboratively with the UNFPA Country Office Communications team, programme staff in the UNFPA Sub office and with the Regional and Headquarters communication and media specialists in UNFPA and other agencies.

You would be responsible for:

The Communications Analyst will create compelling visual communications products through meeting, collecting stories and interviews that promote the work of UNFPA and highlight issues that UNFPA Bangladesh is advocating for in Cox’s Bazar. S/he will also assist in designing and finalizing regular products such as sitreps, reports, fact sheets and other products. She / He will also contribute to event planning and donor relations. The Communications Analyst acts as focal point for media and communications in the UNFPA Sub office to:

  •  Collaborate to prepare and implement an information and communication strategy for the Cox’s Bazar Office. Elaborate innovative ways of communicating for impact and for change, focusing on multimedia, manages and coordinates strategic advocacy activities of UNFPA Sub office.
  •  Support UNFPA Sub office in preparing, producing and distributing communications materials and products, including annual report, press release, design layout, development briefing notes and factsheets.
  •  Prepare talking points and speeches for the Head of Sub Office and the Representative.
  •  Identify and propose storylines to be developed and disseminated through different channels including photo-stories, documentaries on UNFPA interventions, etc.
  •  Conduct interviews with staff, counterparts and beneficiaries on UNFPA’s work and prepare human-interest stories for dissemination through different channels, e.g. UNFPA electronic media including global, regional, country office and UN websites, and national print or electronic media.
  •  Support resource mobilization efforts by preparing relevant documentation, i.e. conference papers, speeches, donor profiles.
  •  Review and edit communication materials prepared by other staff to ensure high quality from a communications point of view, e.g. fundraising proposals, donor reports, fact sheets and knowledge assets.
  •  Provide oversights on production/printing of communications materials and publications (print or electronic/digital) ensuring qualitative aspects of production, e.g. translation, layouts and graphic design.
  •  Manage and maintain the UNFPA Bangladesh Cox’s Bazar website and the UNFPA page on the UNCT website; gather, prepare, edit, present and update online contents;
  •  Maintain email groups for alerting audiences of contents update;
  •  Liaise with multimedia/web team in UNFPA headquarter to ensure compliance with UNFPA policies for web site structure, format, content, updates and usage.
  •  Represent UNFPA in, and actively contribute to, the UN Communication Group. Serve as focal point vis-à-vis UNFPA media units regional and HQ level.
  •  Develop and maintain close collaboration with national media and other relevant organizations and groups including communications focal points of implementing partners. Monitor and document media coverage of UNFPA and UNFPA related issues in the national print and electronic media and bring to the attention of UNFPA management and relevant colleagues; use UNIC media monitoring as a tool; maintain a repository of media pieces; prepare quarterly/annual reports for UNFPA management.
  •  Serve as the main event planner and organizer in the UNFPA Sub office of UNFPA advocacy events such as launch of the State of the World Population Report and World Population Day, donor meetings, visits from UNFPA Executive Board and other key events or visits.
  •  Work closely with UNFPA management and relevant staff, prepare detailed events plans and checklist to ensure well-coordinated and successful implementation, support branding, advocacy and communication efforts under UNFPA Sub Office annual work plans
  •  Ensure publications and other documents funded under UNFPA annual work plans are appropriately branded, edited for quality from a communication point of view, and UNFPA copyright is ensured; prepare summary of UNFPA reports and publications that communicate the contents to non-technical people/general public for use in dissemination and advocacy.
  •  Help with identification and dissemination of knowledge assets and best practices in UNFPA programme; support programme staff in development of them.
  •  Manage the UNFPA Sub Office library on a daily basis; screen incoming publications for the library and ensure circulation among relevant staff; ensure periodic review and disposal.
  •  Oversee distribution of publications, materials and visibility items, including from UNFPA headquarters and regional office; maintains distribution lists and ensures approval by UNFPA management.
  •  Maintain a physical/electronic repository for UNFPA-supported publications and other materials produced under the UNFPA programme, e.g. research reports, training manuals and IEC materials.
  •  Maintain documentation centre for press releases and clippings relevant to UNFPA, as well as photographic and audio-visual materials; develop and maintain a photo database.
  •  Perform any other duties as required by the UNFPA Head of Sub Office.

Qualifications and Experience:

Education:

Advanced university degree in communication, journalism, population, and/or other related social science fields.

Knowledge and Experience:

  •  Minimum of 2 years professional experience in the field of communications, public relations, development and population activities.
  •  An understanding of the Rohingya political context, and experience working with the Rohingya population in Bangladesh.
  •  Excellent understanding of the use of social, print and broadcast media;
  •  Previous experience in advocacy, project monitoring and implementation is desirable.
  •  Knowledge of organizations, in the United Nations, civil society and the private sector that can be sources and recipients of evidence-based knowledge pertinent to the UNFPA mandate and the goals
  •  Computer literacy with a strong ability to use MS Office software and the Internet.
  •  Familiarity with UN procedures and working methods, particularly with UNFPA’s agenda, policies and procedures is highly desirable.
  •  UN common system experience, especially field experience, is desirable.

Languages:

  •  Fluency in English; knowledge of other official UN languages an asset. Ability to speak Bangla, Chittagonian language or Rohingya would be a highly valuable asset.
