Project Background:

The Bangladesh Systems Strengthening for One Health (SSOH) aims to enhance Bangladesh’s global health security (GHS) capacity to operate a high functioning and equitable One Health (OH) disease detection system that prevents, detects, and responds to new and emerging infectious and endemic zoonotic disease, while ensuring good One Health governance and reducing risks of irreversible antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Through evidence-informed and integrated systems approach, SSOH will strengthen Bangladesh’s One Health Systems and enhance the country’s capacity to prevent, detect, respond to, and recover from infectious disease threats. The activity aims therefore aims to achieve results under the following development objectives:

  1. Strengthen Systems for Better One Health Governance across the Government of Bangladesh (GOB)
  2. Strengthen One Health Disease Detection Systems for effective prevention, detection and response.
  3. Reduce Threats of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) across OH sectors.

Role’s Purpose:

The Environment & Wildlife Specialist is a key member of the Technical team. S/he will provide support to the Environment & Wildlife Health Team Lead (EWHTL) in technical activities for effective SSOH implementation. S/he will provide technical and operational support to SSOH implementation, helping to develop the wildlife health technical approach in coordination with animal, public, and environmental health. The individual supports accurate and complete record-keeping and filing systems based on the project’s Field Operations Manual (FOM), USAID regulations, and contract requirements and limitations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports the EWHTL to develop the environment and wildlife health technical approach, as well as integration of animal, public, and environmental health by contributing to the development of standard operating procedures, policies, and guidelines.
  • Coordinates with the Chief of Party, Animal Health Team Lead (AHTL), Public Health Team Lead (PHTL), EWHTL, corresponding technical specialists, and cross-sectoral technical staff to coordinate training in sample collection, lab management and operation, and other critical areas.
  • Evaluate and contribute to reporting requirements and serve as quality control
  • Respond to request for project-related technical information.
  • Review and evaluate technical output produced by team against quality standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in veterinary or environmental sciences, or other relevant field. An advanced degree or its equivalent is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the field of environmental health, or wildlife health. Experience in field of Global Health Security and One Health, and USAID funded programs strongly preferred.
  • Experience in One Health governance, laboratory systems, surveillance, outbreak investigation, and outbreak response desired.
  • Previous experience working on USG or other bilateral and multilateral organization projects.
  • Prior work experience in Bangladesh.
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, and English language skills is required, and proficiency in local languages is preferred.

  • Possesses training and/or work experience in problem-solving, leadership, and conflict management.
  • Ability to work effectively with stakeholders to ensure an integrated approach to program activities.
  • Applies detailed knowledge of country and regional environments to interact with local professionals, partners, and other stakeholders.

Reporting

The Public Health Specialist will report to the Public Health Team Lead.
