The Information Technology Department (ITD) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is seeking to fill a Database Administrator /Sr. Database Administrator. Under the general supervision of the Deputy Division Chief of Infrastructure & Operations, the ideal candidate will be responsible for the platforms and services used to support the IMF’s Database environment. The Database Administrator /Sr. Database Administrator will be considered the IMF’s subject matter expert on the domain and the specific platforms in use at the IMF.

The selected candidate’s main responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  •  Responsible for managing the SQL database infrastructure of the Fund and assist in the support of Oracle and other database environments.
  •  Participates in the development and implementation of the technical infrastructure and physical design of Fund database environment, analyzing existing and future database platforms, and recommending solutions.
  •  Provides technical input on the design and project leadership on projects requiring database management and support.
  •  Designs, maintains, and administers different database technology platforms. Manages and plans for the resource capacity on the various platforms including the related licenses
  •  Leads a team of SQL database administrators to ensure integrity, performance, and reliability of all enterprise database systems.
  •  Coordinates activities performed by the team, tracks, and reports on team activities, defines and document team processes, troubleshoots escalated issues and will be hands-on in operational DBA tasks which involves database monitoring, performance tuning, backup and recovery, installation, maintenance, and disaster recovery

Minimum Qualifications

Advanced university degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or related field of study or equivalent, plus a minimum of 4 years of relevant professional experience; or,

Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field of study plus a minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience is required.

Additionally, below qualifications are sought after:

  •  Minimum of 10+ years of related database management experience required, including designing, implementing, and supporting DB platforms; experience with MS SQL, Azure SQL PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Oracle Exadata and related licensing schema
  •  MS SQL DB Administration certification preferred
  •  Understanding of database storage and backup management

  •  Ability to support various database platforms and learn new technologies as needed.
  •  Knowledge of how to plan and perform database migrations.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

1.Manages a complex database environment including the onboarding of new platforms (design, engineering, installation, and maintenance) while applying database engineering principles and best practices (including designing for high availability, business continuity, etc.).

2.Provides technical input and project leadership for database needs as part of capital project work.

3.Plans and coordinates patching of SQL database systems and upgrades to avoid technical obsolescence.

4.Creates and updates documentation for the database environment, including highly complex detailed architectural designs, test backup and recovery plans.

5.Identifies and implements database architecture improvements and automate monitoring and routine administration to maintain efficiency and reliability. Leverages utility software and programs temporary fixes as needed.

6.Translates business requirements into IT requirements and provides technical recommendations to senior management based on the context of the business and mission of the Fund.

7.Defines and maintains the database technology roadmap.

8.Leads troubleshooting efforts on performance issues in the database environment and identifies solutions.

9.Records problem symptoms and status information in a timely fashion and communicates internally within IT and with the customer while providing follow up to ensure full resolution.

10.Improves database architecture by tracking emerging technologies and evaluating their applicability to business goals and operational requirements.

11.Manages and maintains database license compliances.

12.Performs administration and deployment of database instances.

13.Automates monitoring and routine administration of databases

14.Performs capacity planning by developing and implementing solutions for database and server sizing/capacity and space requirements

15.Ensures performance considerations are designed into system configurations and maintains a formal methodology for reporting performance

16.Oversees and validates the technical work of the managed services provider teams

17.Ensures the security of critical database infrastructure by adhering to Fund standards and guidelines for technological systems and safeguarding of data

This vacancy shall be filled by a 3-year Term appointment in accordance with the Fund’s new employment rules that took effect on May 1, 2015.
