Volunteering at PBI Mexico At Peace Brigades International


PBI volunteers come from diverse countries and cultures. What they have in common is a strong commitment to non-violence and a belief in the contribution that all people can make to achieve a more just and peaceful world.

Brigade members commit to a minimum of one year of volunteering in the field that will be carried out in a Work Team. The Team will be located in the State of Morelos from where it will work in the states of Morelos, Puebla, Michoacán, Mexico City and Sonora. PBI brigade members live and work together in a home office, participating in all PBI work areas (Physical accompaniment, Advocacy, Communication/Visibility, Security and protection training), including administrative, logistical and internal communication tasks. associated with the functioning of the organization.

The people who will reach the field with the Mexico Project will have the possibility of participating in the expansion of the exploratory processes that have the objectives of expanding the scope of PBI’s work in Mexico and opening new processes of accompaniment for human rights defenders.

What requirements must be met to be a volunteer in the field?

  • Strong personal reflection on your motivations for working with PBI in the field.
  • High and fluent level of Spanish: spoken, written and read ( equivalent to C1/C2 or similar ). Unfortunately we cannot make exceptions to the language requirement.
  • Previous work experience in social movements or human rights NGOs, cooperation, social work, and/or with grassroots, social or community organizations, especially in Latin America.
  • Minimum commitment of one year of volunteer work in a PBI Mexico team.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mandate of PBI Mexico.
  • Commitment to work following the principles of non-partisanship and non-violence.
  • Availability and ability to do thematic work of all axes (advocacy, support, communication and security) and administrative tasks.
  • Experience of teamwork and group coexistence, especially in stressful situations.
  • Computer knowledge at the user level: word processors, email and databases.
  • Availability and ability to comply with security regulations to work within a conflict context.
  • Knowledge and application of the intersectional and differential gender perspective.

It will also be assessed:

  • Knowledge of the current Mexican reality and its history;
  • Management of discourse and ability to speak with different actors (government and civil society), to develop campaigns, knowledge in communication and advocacy;
  • Willingness to live and work in a team with an open attitude to other perspectives and experiences, willingness to form a team and support each other;
  • Experience in conflict resolution and/or ability to deal with conflicts in a positive and mature manner;
  • Previous knowledge of Mexico/Latin America, human rights/international law, repression, contexts of violence, social movements and/or previous work with NGOs;
  • Political analysis capacity;
  • Experience working in consensus (knowledge of the tools and processes used for consensus) or ability and interest in training;
  • Discretion and handling of sensitive information;
  • Cultural sensitivity;
  • Good stress management and prioritization ability;
  • A minimum age of 25 years:Due to the characteristics of the work to be carried out, it is important to take into account that those who are part of the team in the field have the ability to adapt to diverse contexts delimited by the political and social situation of the country and the mandate and principles of PBI in Mexico; ability to communicate and interact positively with other people; a good level of self-knowledge that includes personal strategies for managing stress.   • Coverage of the following expenses: round trip to and from your country of residence, all expenses for work trips and stay (accommodation, food, medical insurance), monthly financial support of 250 euros per month for personal expenses and repatriation of 45.00 Euros per month worked once the stay is completed and the annual volunteer contract has been successfully completed.
