Operational Context

With displacement crises reaching unprecedented levels and causing significant surges in funding needs, UNHCR has been considering alternative sources of funding, including contributions motivated by various faiths, or in other words, Faith-based Philanthropy. UNHCR’s Private Sector Partnerships Division (PSP) has been successfully exploring opportunities to unlock the impact of Islamic Philanthropy (IP), in particular Zakat (obligatory annual alms) and Sadaqah (voluntary contributions). For the purpose, on the lives of refugees and IDPs. For the purpose, and as part of a long-term engagement strategy, UNHCR launched in 2019 the Refugee Zakat Fund, a trusted, compliant, and effective mechanism harnessing the power of Zakat and Sadaqah to assist most vulnerable refugees and IDPs

Given the annual growth of Islamic philanthropy income for UNHCR, and the growing interest in UNHCR’s Refugee Zakat Fund App which was launched in 2021, PSP is looking to build on the success of UNHCR’s Refugee Zakat Fund App, maximizing its potential and scope to pave the way to expand this initiative to some key countries in the region and globally.

The incumbent will manage relations with a diverse array of internal and external stakeholders, with the main aim of increasing funds received by UNHCR through the App. The incumbent preferably has proven fundraising experience, in addition to connections in the sectors of Islamic Philanthropy and Islamic Banking/ Finance. He/She is expected to support in further shaping the engagement strategy for UNHCR’s Refugee Zakat App to mainstream communication and optimize the donor journey.

2. Job Requirement

Under the supervisor of the Senior PSP IG Officer and in coordination with the Islamic Philanthropy team, the Senior PSP Associate (Refugee Zakat Fund App) will be responsible to:

-Design and execute a year-long engagement and growth strategy for the App.

-Work with the Islamic Philanthropy and Campaign teams to create a relevant communication plan for the App including systematic push notifications.

-Coordinate with the Donor Care team to draft a comprehensive communications plan for the App donors using all available communication channels (Email, SMS…)

-Implement plans to convert leads and App sign ups

-Create a feedback mechanism ensuring App donor insights are systematically advising technical updates of the App

-Provide advice on digital best practices in the area of Islamic Philanthropy, accompanied by recommendations on how UNHCR can best employ such practices to increase credibility on the App

-Manage the budget of the App

-Perform other functions as needed.

3. Monitoring and Progress Controls

This position will be responsible to

-Achieve the forecasted income, donors number and growth from the App

-Achieve the desired retention rate from App users

4. Qualifications and Experience

a. Education

Minimum 4 years relevant experience with High School Diploma; or 2 years relevant work experience with Bachelor or equivalent or higher in Finance, Islamic Finance, Economics, Business Administration, and/or equivalent work experience.

b. Work Experience

-Proven experience, knowledge, and understanding of Islamic philanthropy policies, laws, regulations, and operations in the MENA region and beyond (is a must).

-Proven experience working in non-technical aspects of mobile apps development

-Demonstrated knowledge of external stakeholders in the realm of Islamic philanthropy including scholars, institutions, think tanks, suppliers and service providers, among others.

-Experience in managing the production of fundraising materials from creating concepts to developing and communicating them to different audiences.

-Experience in electronic fundraising and new media.

-Experience in emergency fundraising for a humanitarian organization.

-Proven expertise in fundraising, Islamic philanthropy and/ or Islamic finance.

-Good knowledge of humanitarian assistance and UN environment.

c. Key Competencies

-Strong fundraising skills are required, and knowledge of Islamic Philanthropy and Finance is strongly preferred

-High client orientation, networking, and relationship-building skills

-Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

-Excellent negotiation skills.

-Good written and oral communication and interpersonal skills

-Strong project management skills.

-Fluency in Arabic and English is required.
