Job Title: Senior Humanitarian Communications Adviser

JOB PURPOSE :

To be responsible for managing and facilitating all forms of external communications, proactive and reactive, on behalf of IPPF Humanitarian, the arm of IPPF which works to provide sexual and reproductive health care in crisis situations. They will report to the Humanitarian Director, and be a member of the Global Communications and IPPF Humanitarian teams.

KEY TASKS :

  1. To formulate and maintain a communication yearly work plan for IPPF Humanitarian, in line with IPPF’s overall communications strategy, and ensure it is understood by all stakeholders and followed.
  2. To be responsible for the commissioning of all externally-produced content with regard to IPPF Humanitarian and, together with the IPPF communications teams, ensure its best use across all platforms.
  3. To be the main media point of contact for IPPF Humanitarian, seeking media opportunities, dealing with media queries, and producing press releases as required.
  4. To supporty the capacity of IPPF’s field and Mas and Humanitarian staff to conduct media interviews, and develop and implement a capacity building plan.
  5. To update appropriate IPPF social media platforms as required with IPPF Humanitarian material, and liaise with communications team colleagues to ensure updates as required.
  6. Work with RO communications team to ensure IPPF Humanitarian crisis response teams are equipped as appropriate to allow communications and content gathering from the field and understand such responsibilities, including branding of materials.
  7. To be deployed with crisis response teams if required to support MAs, manage communications from the field for IPPF Humanitarian and gather material.
  8. To liaise with global and regional communications teams colleagues to ensure that IPPF Humanitarian digital pages are up to date and to integrate humanitarian content into regional sites.
  9. To ensure that individual projects within IPPF Humanitarian, such as SPRINT IV, SRHiEP-Pacific, are identified as appropriate and recognised, and to liaise with appropriate external communications teams – eg DFAT/MFAT – to coordinate and amplify coverage of such projects.
  10. Ensure that Stream3 responses have the appropriate budget and activities included and are showcased at national and global level A well as with donors
  11. To target international meetings attended by potential donors by creating and showcasing multimedia output showcasing the evidence base to demonstrate the value of IPPF Humanitarian and the need for greater support for SRH in crisis.
  12. To create and publish digital multimedia asset pages on the IPPF website and internal facing assets e.g. Asset Bank
  13. To update all social platforms – e.g. Twitter, Facebook
  14. To create simple graphics and edit simple audio and video content
  15. To ensure gender is effectively mainstreamed and showcased within the remit of the post and in line with IPPF’s Humanitarian feminist principles and approach.
  16. To build and maintain positive working relationships with all members of staff and contacts both within and outside the Federation.
  17. To become familiar with the Federation’s Health & Safety Programme guidelines. To do everything possible to ensure a healthy and safe working environment.
  18. To undertake any other reasonable duties as may be requested from time to time.

  • Advise the Humanitarian Director and Director, Solidarity for Change & Voice and, liaise with other senior staff in London Office, Regional Offices and potentially MAs as appropriate.

PERSON SPECIFICATION :

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree, preferably in communications field or equivalent standard of education and professional experience in communications.

PROVEN ABILITY :

  • Strong experience in the development and application of external communications initiatives.
  • Background/understanding of development and humanitarian issues desirable.
  • Experience of working in humanitarian settings desirable, especially with an international Non-Government Organisation.
  • Strong background in creating engaging written content and other messaging.
  • Experience of gathering communications content on the ground.
  • Experience of working in a major news agency desirable.

SKILLS

  • Innovative and creative thinking.

  • Excellent writing skills, including the ability to write, quickly, clearly and concisely, producing engaging copy
  • Ability to work within defined budget.
  • Production and publishing knowledge about external materials.
  • Sound administrative and organizational skills.
  • Computer literate – to include experience of working with Portfolio and publishing management software tools e.g. Basecamp. InCopy software skills desirable.

The role involves international travel of up to 75 days per year, sometimes at short notice.
