Job Description

I. History and organizational context

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) is part of the United Nations Secretariat. Its mission is to mobilize and coordinate humanitarian action effectively in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering. Its mission is also to advocate for the rights of people in need, promote disaster preparedness and prevention, and facilitate sustainable solutions.

As part of its activities in Niger, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) wishes to hire a Senior Driver(e) to serve in the Niamey office.

II. Position objective

Under the supervision of the person in charge of’administration, the Chauffeur Senior provides reliable and safe driving services by S’assuring quality work and of very high level. It takes a customer-oriented approach to work. He acts in all circumstances with a high sense of responsibility, courtesy and tact. It is able to work with people of different origin and cultural.

It provides driving services to the Head of Office, other high-level personalities and visitors in the SNU demanding a very high level of discretion and integrity, and, a sense of responsibility and an excellent knowledge of protocol procedures and security issues.

OCHA adopts a portfolio approach to respond to changing operational needs and take advantage of the links between interventions in order to achieve its strategic objectives. Therefore, OCHA staff are expected to work in units, functions, teams and projects in multidisciplinary teams to improve and enable horizontal collaboration.

III. Main tasks and responsibilities

  •  Provide reliable and safe driving services, mainly using office vehicles, to the Head of the Office and other United Nations officials and visitors.

Example of Duties:

  •  Transport the Head of Office or other visitors or United Nations officials by applying the appropriate protocols.
  •  Carry out the distribution and collection of mail, documents and’other products
  •  Welcoming official staff and visitors to the airport and assisting in the organisation of visa and customs formalities, where appropriate.

2.)Ensure cost reduction through the correct use and daily maintenance of the assigned office vehicle.

Example of Duties:

  •  Maintain daily vehicle records
  •  Contribute to the preparation of vehicle maintenance plans and reports.
  •  Carry out minor repairs in a timely manner and/or arrange major repairs
  •  Ensure that oil changes, tyre and brake checks, car washing, etc., are carried out in a timely manner.

3.) Ensure that all necessary documents, supplies and spare parts are available in the assigned vehicle.

  •  Maintain vehicle-related documents, such as vehicle insurance, logbooks, office directory and city or country map.
  •  Ensure that the vehicle’s first aid kit is properly stocked with standard medical supplies.

IV. Requirements: Education

Secondary studies required (level BEPC)

Experience, knowledge and skills

  •  A minimum of three years (with a high school diploma) of relevant professional experience as a driver, with a safe driving record, is required.
  •  Knowledge of driving rules and regulations, as well as skills in minor vehicle repair and maintenance.
  •  Valid driving licence.
  •  Knowledge of security protocols and requirements is an advantage.

Language Requirements

  •  Fluency in the United Nations language at the duty station is required
  •  A command of the national language of the duty station is required for local staff.
