The Fondation du Docip

Docip is a non-profit foundation whose goal is to support Indigenous Peoples in the defense of their rights, mainly with UN and European institutions. It aims to facilitate the participation of indigenous representations at the international level, in particular by providing them with translation and interpretation services in 4 languages (french, english, spanish and russian), but also by training them and accompanying them in their advocacy.

Docip was established in 1978 at the initiative of indigenous delegations participating in the first International Conference on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples at the United Nations in Geneva in 1977.

Context

Documentation at Docip, including archives and library materials, is a central element of the Foundation’s support activities. The collection of archives, containing more than 10’000 statements by indigenous delegations made to the’ONU, has been included in the register Memory of the World from’UNESCO in 2017.

Documentation at Docip is a living element, a tool used by indigenous delegations to have their rights recognized, both at the national and’international levels.

The chosen person will carry out his activity under the direct supervision of the management, with the’ technical support of a committee from the Foundation Board and will have to supervise potential interns or volunteers.

Tasks

Archives :

  • Choice and implementation of the management software of’archives, upgrade of the database of digital documents,
  • Research and responsibility of’development of storage spaces
  • Supervision and participation in the classification and cataloguing of documents of’archives,
  • Project for digitization of analogue-only documents and project for audiovisual sources
  • During the conferences : collection and provision of statements made by indigenous delegations at’ONU, as well as those of other stakeholders.

Library :

  • Choice and implementation of library management software, including,
  • Supervision and participation in the classification and cataloguing of references
  • Proposals for sorting existing works.
  • Research and responsibility of’development of storage spaces

Other :

  • Support for the establishment of’an advisory committee of’expert·s indigenous charged with guiding the work in the various aspects of documentary information written, oral and audio-visual.
  • Promote the documentation centre within indigenous and institutional networks,
  • Communication of Docip information in general on social networks
  • Establishment of annual budgets or on the occasion of requests for funding
  • Responding to requests from users of the Centre

Profile sought

Professional qualifications

  • At least a BA in’information sciences, title deemed equivalent or experience of several years in a similar position.
  • Two years of experience in a similar position (documentation centre)
  • Proficiency in management processes and standards for the description of archives and bibliographic references. Mastery of tools for digitization and preservation of documents. Excellent capabilities of’analysis, great sense of’organization and communication.
  • Interest in technology watch and the development of new documentary products.
  • Ability to meet the needs of users and facilitate their access to documentary resources.
  • Mastery of French and English at’oral and’ (minimum level C1 – Common European framework of reference for languages). Knowledge of Russian and/or Spanish is an asset.

Knowledge of’history of Indigenous struggles would be a plus.

  • Ability to work autonomously and responsibly, while at the same time being embedded in well-defined structural flowcharts
  • Curious and open-minded’·: Respect for very diverse cultures
  • Spirit of’team and sense of’humour

Specific constraints

  • The person must have the legal right to work in Switzerland
  • The person will have to adapt to the variable rhythms of the’ONU conferences.
  • Some hourly flexibility is required, as well as’availability to travel (at least 1 annual trip).

This is’a full-time position, based in Geneva and under a contract of employment under Swiss law.

It will be possible to provide it partly in telework if the work program s’y is ready and after agreement with management.
