At the start of 2023, Burkina Faso was plagued by one of the largest internal displacement crises in Africa, with neighboring countries such as Mali and Niger. The situation stems from a complex set of factors and from the presence and increasing activities of non-state armed groups ( Overview of humanitarian needs, 2022 ) . Inter-community clashes for land, water and other scarce resources have also become more frequent. According to the latest national data, the country had 1,719,332 displaced persons registered as of September 30, 2022, 60.40% of these internally displaced persons are children, 22.89% of these displaced are women ( OCHA, Oct 2022 ).
According to the 2022 semi-annual report of the GBV subgroup, 91% of the GBV cases reported during the period are internally displaced persons ( IDP ). Women and girls represent 97% of the cases reported. ( Analysis report Of The Situation Of Violence Based on Gender In Burkina Faso, September 2022 ).
