Researcher on Debt Relief and Conflict Resolution At European Institute of Peace

Based in Brussels and active in over a dozen countries, the European Institute of Peace (www.eip.org) is an independent organisation working collaboratively with the parties to the conflict, those who represent people suffering from insecurity or at risk of violence, as well as European decision-makers and the conflict prevention, resolution and mediation community.

We provide practical experience, technical expertise, and policy advice on conflict resolution. We use a variety of tools to help us do this, including analysis, mapping and design of peace processes and agreements, facilitating policy discussions, and proposing practical engagement, for example through inclusive dialogue and mediation support.

Are you captivated by our innovative approach to peace, and do you want to contribute to the mission of our institute? Do you share our vision for a world where people live in safety and peace because conflicts and grievances are resolved through inclusive dialogue and lasting political agreements?

The Conflict Justice and Reconciliation programme, within the Peace Practice and Innovation (PPI) unit, is seeking a highly motivated and experienced researcher to contribute to a scoping initiative which examines the link between debt relief and conflict resolution. The scoping will examine questions such as the potential benefits and risks of linking debt relief with peace efforts, relevant perspectives among key stakeholders in conflict-affected states, practical cases where debt relief has or can contribute to Peacemaking and Peacebuilding, and approaches among policymakers towards the actual or potential role of debt relief in conflict resolution. Overall, this research will contribute to exploring support to conditions for peace through innovative policy tools and recommendations.

You will

• Compile a brief literature review on the current state of knowledge regarding debt relief and conflict resolution;

• Map relevant key International Financial Institutions (IFIs), governmental bodies, and NGOs involved in debt relief efforts, detailing their roles and approaches in conflict resolution;

• Identify a shortlist of priority conflict-affected countries that stand to benefit from debt relief initiatives, with a rationale for each;

• Develop strategic recommendations for the Institute’s engagement with identified actors and in selected contexts to further explore and potentially promote the use of debt relief in conflict resolution and peace efforts;

• Other relevant duties as agreed with reporting manager when jointly defining the scope of the study.

Your skills and experience

• At least ten (10) years of experience in the relevant field of development, conflict resolution and Peacebuilding;

• A proven track record of high-quality publications in this field;

• Proven research experience with a focus on debt relief;

• Practical experience in working in conflict-affected areas will be considered an asset;

• Strong analytical skills and ability to synthesize complex information;

• Excellent command of English;

• Ability to work well under deadlines and meticulous attention to detail;

• Capable of working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

What we are offering
