1.0 INTRODUCTION

Solidaridad Network is an international solution-oriented civil society organization working through seven regional expertise centers to transform markets to make them more sustainable and inclusive. Our regional expertise centers include Asia, East and Central Africa, Europe, Latin America, North America, Southern Africa, West Africa and our global Secretariat in the Netherlands. In East and Central Africa, Solidaridad is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya with country offices and programmes in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda. We bring together supply chain players and engage them with innovative solutions to improve production, ensuring the transition to a sustainable and inclusive economy that maximizes the benefit for all. We facilitate strengthening of local capacity in developing countries, support the creation of enabling environments for economies to thrive, and improve market access.

Solidaridad strives to be an organization that understands the signs of modern times, seeking to be a Civil Society Organization (CSO) with its own place and role in society, while simultaneously interacting with governments and markets. With 54 years of experience globally in facilitating the development of socially responsible, ecologically sound and profitable supply chains, Solidaridad is a frontrunner in sustainable economic development. Solidaridad envisions a world in which all we produce, and all we consume, can sustain us while respecting the planet, each other and the next generations. Solidaridad embraces the public-private and people partnerships (PPPP) in order to test innovations, speed up change, and take success to scale. Globally, Solidaridad works with Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Miners (ASGMs) and other 10 commodity producers namely commodity crops (coffee, tea, cocoa),intensive land use crops (sugar, palm, soy), industry and mining (cotton & textiles, leather, gold), and food related crops (livestock & dairy, fruit & vegetables).

2.0 RECLAIM SUSTAINABILITY! PROGRAMME GOLD

RECLAIM SUSTAINABILITY! (RS!) is a five year programme (2021-2025) supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kingdom of the Netherlands. The programme is implemented in Kenya and Uganda through a consortium and aims to invoke the actual meaning of sustainability both in theory and practice in global commodity supply chains.

The strategic objective of the RECLAIM Sustainability! Programme is to contribute to inclusive sustainable value chains and trade in an innovative way, in which the interests, voices and rights of farmers, workers and citizens (both male and female) are represented and heard in decision making for sustainable use of natural resources, decent work, fair value distribution, and sustainable consumption.

Gold mining is a global business with operations on every continent. Africa produces about 24% of the world’s gold, with gold mining operations in at least 34 African countries including Kenya and Uganda. It is one of the key pillars of these economies. Global employment figures for Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Miners (ASGMs) sectors are estimated to be 20 to 40 million, with Kenya and Uganda having close to 800,000 and 300,000 respectively – As of 2015. Between 70% and 80% of the small-scale miners are informal, ranging from those whose livelihoods rely on subsistence farming to both skilled and semi-skilled workers who migrated to mining areas in search of work. The sector, however, is plagued by low levels of formalization, low adoption of efficient and effective technology, low capital investment, high labor intensity and relatively simple methods for exploration, extraction and processing. Reliable statistics on ASM production volumes are a challenge, however it is widely theorized that approximately 20% of the global supply of newly mined gold comes from ASM sources, while 80% comes from LSM sources.

To address these systemic challenges, the RECLAIM Sustainability! Programme Gold seeks to strengthen interaction between: A Vibrant and Strong Civil Society that engages and debates with public and private decision makers, monitors implementation and enforcement of policies and mechanisms, holds decision makers accountable, safeguards gender and social inclusion, and demands and consumes sustainable products; A Responsible Private Sector implementing comprehensive policies and innovative inclusive business models for truly sustainable sourcing, production, trade and investment; and a Supportive Public Sector enforcing national, regional and international comprehensive norms and regulatory frameworks that ensure sustainable production, trade and consumption.
