Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The United Nations Joint Global Programme on Essential Services for Women and Girls Subject to Violence, a partnership by UN Women, UNFPA, WHO, UNDP and UNODC, aims to provide greater access to a coordinated set of essential and quality multi-sectoral services for all women and girls who have experienced gender based violence. Under the framework of the UN Joint Global Programme on Essential Services (a partnership between UN Women, UNFPA, UNODC, UNDP and WHO), UN Women has led the development of a handbook for law enforcement on gender-responsive police services for women and girls who have experienced violence, together with the International Association of Women Police (IAWP) and UNODC, and supported by other key rule of law partners.

The results of this this work, the Handbook on Gender-Responsive Police Services for Women and Girls Subject to Violence was launched in early 2021 and is currently being rolled out in 5 regions to support the implementation/strengthening of a gender-responsive policing response, as well as build commitment among law enforcement associations to promote the benefits of gender-responsive policing and support for the creation of gender-responsive law enforcement institutions. Ethiopia among the countries that are selected for the rollout.

As such, UN Women is seeking the services of a translator that will translate the above – mentioned Handbook from English in to Amharic. A translated version of the Handbook will facilitate the implementation of the handbook in Ethiopia..

Objective of the assignment

Provide a translation from English into Amharic of the text of the above-mentioned Handbook, in a word document.

Scope of Work and Deliverables

wWth the overall guidance of the UN Women technical team on ending violence against women and girls (EVAWG), the translator will use the English word files of the Handbook provided by UN Women and produce a translated version (in Amharic) of the Handbook

The translator will be relied on to confidently execute with timeliness and consistency, in addition to working in an open and collaborative way with UN Women.

Experience of providing similar translation services for UN Women and/or other UN entities in relation to documents on gender equality and/or ending violence against women, with a specific focus on gender-responsive policing, would be beneficial in performing this role.

The technical specialist in policing is expected to closely work with the Ethiopia Country Office (CO) EVAWG section, the EVAW HQ section, gender-responsive policing experts, and the technical specialist in policing. First draft version of the Amharic translation of the Handbook

The translator will be provided with the word files in English of the Handbook and will then be expected to produce a first draft of the translation, aligned English version of the Handbook .

After translation, check correctness of language and spelling and conduct a comprehensive review of the document with a view to ensure flow, clarity, and continuity. The translator is expected to closely work with the technical specialist in policing to ensure the translation is context specific and aligns with the right terminologies in the police sector.

  •  Approx. 529 pages (approx. 205,000 words in a Word text)

8 weeks, upon awarding of purchase order

Updated version of the Amharic translation of the Handbook

The translators will incorporate /edits from the UN Women into the first draft of the Amharic text, into an updated version

2 weeks, upon receipt of the mark ups/edits from the UN Women team

Final version of the Amharic translation of the Handbook

The translators will incorporate any final edits from the UN Women on the revised version of the Amharic text, and finalize the translation

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  •  Advanced degree or equivalent in Literature, Linguistics, translation, or another relevant field.

Experience

  •  At least 7 years of demonstrated work experience as a translator in the Amharic and English languages.
  •  Strong writing and communication skills.
  •  Experience in writing, translating, or editing United Nations publications or other policy documents will be considered an asset.
  •  Familiarity with terminologies and concepts of gender equality, the justice system and policing will be an advantage.
  •  The consultant may be asked to submit sample works as part of the selection process.

Languages

  •  Fluency in Amharic and English

Communication

  •  Fluency and proficiency in spoken and written English is required including the ability to convey concepts and key messages in a clear and concise style to different audiences. Knowledge of the local languages would be an asset;

Computer skills

  •  Experience in using MS Office (Word and Excel).
