Livelihood Technical Assistant (Vegetable Garden/Tree Planting) At Hope and Rural Aid Foundation (HARAF)


Hope and Rural Aid Foundation (HARAF) is a National non – profit organization functioning since 2011 but was officially registered under the corporate affairs commission (CAC) of the federal government of Nigeria in the year 2016 with registration number RN: CAC/IT/:85536. HARAF are into humanitarian and development activities with full operational presence and offices in Adamawa, Borno, Yobe with field offices in Michika and Calabar. The head office in Yola. The organization works in the Food Security and Livelihood, Protection (Child Protection/GBV), Education and Shelter/CCCM Thematic areas.

HARAF plans to implement complimentary livelihoods activities particularly to introduce livelihoods interventions to build their capacity by contributing to their basic food needs and ultimately reduce the cost of life savings interventions over time. This will also provide opportunity to utilize the otherwise idle labour, mostly from youth who are caught in humanitarian crisis through Entrepreneurship, Livelihood Intervention Skills acquisition and Financial Literacy Training at selected communities of Yola South LGA, Adamawa state.

Job Description/Responsibilities

The Livelihood project officer (Production/Horticulture) will:

  • Organize and supervise selected well abled persons in the production of vegetables and economic trees.
  • Responsible for the selection and verification of beneficiaries (well abled individuals) in coordination with the Livelihood Program Officer, Targeting Committee, and the Community Mobilization and Engagement Assistant using of selection criteria.
  • Actively engage and support in community sensitization activities on the importance of trees and vegetables.
  • Develop production plans the vegetable and tree production.
  • Maintain clear communication with beneficiaries in accordance with humanitarian policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate with vegetable seeds and tree vendors of best variety for best practice and production.
  • Organize best production methods/practise for the safety and dignity of beneficiaries.
  • Conduct field visits to project sites to ensure maximum production of the trees and vegetables.
  • Coordinate transplanting of the trees from the nursery to various selected communities.
  • Provide close supervision and monitoring to the implementation of livelihood project related activities in the field.
  • Engage as part of project collaboration with other sectors within the multifunctional centre to ensure a positive work environment and project coordination.
  • Build positive local working relationships with local communities, governmental organisation and non-governmental organisation and other partners.
  • Attend and report back on progress of project with Project manager and related meetings.
  • Take daily record and attendance of the well abled individuals working on the production sites.
  • Manage the day-to-day implementation of project activities to achieve project goals and objectives including monitoring and evaluation of project outputs, outcomes and overall aims.
  • Identify, document and disseminate relevant project learning within the programme to the project manager and Livelihood program officer.
  • Provide plant care advice to other team members.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or a related field (or associate degree and equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in vegetable garden production and tree planting.  
  • Proven experience in humanitarian environments with successful examples of livelihood project implementation.
  • A good written and verbal communication in English language.  
  • Good in local languages (Hausa and/Fulani), will be an advantage.
