Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.


Background Information

The Department of Policy and Research supports IOM’s work in the areas of migration policy, migration research and international migration law, and acts as a catalyst for learning and innovation. As part of this department, the Migration Governance Indicators (MGI) team implements the MGI initiative in collaboration with the Global Migration Data Analysis Center. The MGI, is an initiative designed to support governments at the local and national levels to assess their migration policies and strategies to identify good practices and shed light on areas in need of further development.


Under the direct supervision of the MGI Program Manager, the Intern will assist the team roll-out MGI assessments in more than 25 countries, and more specifically assist implement the resource mobilization strategy.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct research on diaspora philanthropy in countries that could potentially participate in MGI assessments.
  2. Help prepare briefing packages on the MGI ahead of important meetings with donors, or participating governments.
  3. Attend and take notes in relevant team meetings, and meetings with external stakeholders.
  4. Conduct research and stay abreast of recent political developments in participating MGI countries. Update the team on possible risk factors for the implementation of the project.
  5. Assist with the organization of meetings and events.
  6. Participate in team call with participating IOM Missions to discuss the implementation of the MGI at country and local level.
  7. Help scale up the local MGI initiative by identifying possible participating cities.
  8. Help develop and implement the communications strategy for the MGI.
  9. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

  • The Intern will gain experience in working in an international multicultural environment, within the United Nations system.
  • Gain experience in organization, management and international cooperation activities
  • The Intern will acquire technical knowledge in communications in the field of international relations.
  • The Intern can also access online training courses at the disposal of all IOM staff.
  • The Intern will have the possibility to interact with numerous stakeholders, as well as with the internal and external partners involved in migration discussions.
  • The Intern will also gain extensive experience working in an international and multi-cultural environment.

Required Qualifications and Experience:


  • Master’s degree in Migration Studies, Economics, Statistics, International Relations, Social Sciences, Development Studies, International Affairs or a related field from an accredited institution.


  • Practical experience multi-tasking, prioritizing and working independently.


  • Excellent computer literacy;
  • Excellent critical thinking and writing skills;
  • Ability to produce quality work accurately and concisely according to deadlines;
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds;
  • Excellent communication and diplomatic skills.


IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of Spanish and/or French is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.


Eligibility and Selection

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

  1. have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
  2. are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
  3. are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
  4. are either students who are approaching the end of their degree (minimum two completed years in the case of a bachelor’s degree), or have graduated in the last 12 months. e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

The appointment is subject to funding confirmation.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and security clearances. Subject to certain exemptions, vaccination against COVID-19 will in principle be required for individuals hired on or after 15 November 2021. This will be verified as part of the medical clearance process.
