Location: This role sits within our People & Culture Team, which is part of our Global Hub and provides leadership and partnership to our teams in Europe, Australia, and Asia. This role is open to candidates residing in France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, and the UK.

About the Centre for Public Impact:

At the Centre for Public Impact, we believe in the potential of government to bring about better outcomes for people. We are a global not-for-profit organisation, founded by the Boston Consulting Group, who serve as a learning partner for governments, public servants and the diverse network of changemakers who are leading the charge to reimagine government so that it works for everyone.

We are a small organisation, and just over six years old, but already our global footprint is expansive. Along with the Europe team, we have a team in Australia/ Aotearoa New ZealandAsia and North America. We are all aligned by the Global Hub team who provide people & culture, operational, finance, and communications partnership across the regions.

What do we expect from the Global Manager, People & Culture role?

We recognise that there are many tangible as well as invisible ways in which historically oppressed groups face discrimination, violence, or indifference from systems around us. Your role is an integral part of our work to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) across the whole of CPI, ensuring that our staff, wherever they live and whoever they are, feel valued, appreciated, seen, and supported. You will steward this work alongside a team of committed colleagues and help to shape our emerging culture. You’ll bring an expansive, curious, and nimble point of view to this work and will be energised by thinking about our People & Culture function at CPI as global as well as regional, seeking to understand where standardisation serves us and where customization serves us.

You’ll advance the growth and infrastructure of many of our people and culture systems, structures, and processes. You’ll build relationships and communicate about our work with candidates and staff. You’ll help to advance best practices in nonprofit/social impact people & culture policies and practices. And you’ll join a global team (currently with colleagues in Australia, UK, India, Spain, France, Germany, Sweden and the US) that takes this work really seriously, but not ourselves. As someone whose work will include building relationships with everyone at CPI, you will be responsible for making sure our global teams are set up to succeed and assist in keeping our workplace a great place to work for everyone. This role will largely be focused on our teams in Europe, Australia and Asia, however you will also partner with all CPI regions worldwide. Key responsibilities include:

1. DEIB-Centred People & Culture Development

  • Deepening our organisational understanding of different cultural and regional contexts and developing context-driven plans and roadmaps to advance our global commitments to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) at CPI
  • Guiding a learning and development strategy for staff, including cultivating opportunities for learning and development for team members
  • Facilitating regular regional team check-ins to foster communication keeping us focused, aligned, and moving in the same direction
  • Launching culture surveys and analysing data to assess employee engagement
  • Guiding the management of employee performance and feedback systems in partnership with our regional teams

2. DEIB-Centred Programmatic Leadership and Partnership

  • Collaborate with our program teams to advance DEIB in our external work, providing thought leadership and expertise to embed equity within our learning partnerships and programmatic offerings
  • In partnership with our Storytelling and Communications team, and our Knowledge, Learning, and Impact team, amplify our ability to centre equity in our storytelling efforts and learning and impact measurement systems

3. Strategy and Operations

  • Partnering with our teams in Europe, Australia and Asia to support each team’s strategic operating plans, including learning goals and portfolio planning
  • Advancing and applying consistent systems and processes for performance management, pay, promotion, and progression, and other People & Culture priorities
  • Working with regions to lead staffing and workforce planning (including succession planning) to forecast long-term hiring needs and/or new roles that align with CPI’s strategic operating plan
  • Coordinating regular virtual and in-person team meetings with CPIE, CPIANZ, and CPIA, with emphasis on the People & Culture components of these spaces
  • Advancing change management processes regionally and globally, particularly with regard to building our overall DEIB and people & culture infrastructures

4. Employee Experience

  • Guiding talent strategy, including recruiting, hiring, and onboarding
  • Working with regions and global teams to identify hiring needs, submitting job postings online, collecting applications, guiding application review process, conducting candidate interviews, and successfully closing out recruitments
  • Preparing offer letters/contracts and ensuring all information is entered in HRIS/shared with PEO (Professional Employer Organisation) and relevant information is collected ready for first day
  • Conducting relevant right to work checks to ensure legal compliance
  • Coordinating with our Finance & Operations team and leading onboarding processes and trainings in a way that promotes a sense of belonging for new joiners
  • Providing advice on existing benefits for employees, managing relationships with benefits providers and conducting annual reviews of staff satisfaction with these benefits.

5. Employee Relations and Communications

  • Managing employee relations cases including dispute resolutions, disciplinaries, grievances, performance issues, and redundancy in ways that blend both conventional and restorative-justice-centred approaches.
  • Staying in touch with relevant employment laws and updates pertaining to our teams in Europe, Australia, and India and advising on our overall policies and practices in these regions.

6. Thought Leadership

  • Collaborating with each of our global teams to understand what’s working and what isn’t with regard to our People and Culture processes and innovating where needed
  • Supporting members of the People & Culture team with mentorship, deep listening, and problem-solving skills as a partner and team member invested in our collective success
  • Advancing the skill and expertise you bring as a practitioner in your craft across all of CPI’s regions and teams

We’re a remote-first team, and this position can be based in the countries mentioned at the top of this posting, which are the countries in which CPI currently has an operational infrastructure within Europe. You will report to our Global Director of People and Culture who is based in the US, and you’ll work with colleagues on our People & Culture team who are based in India and the US.

The global nature of our work means that we’re looking for someone who is flexible and interested in sharing (and gaining) a global point of view in managing our People & Culture work. This means that we sometimes require flexibility (occasional early mornings or later evenings) in order to collaborate effectively with our teammates around the world.

The person we’re looking for will:

  • Be passionate about CPI’s vision for reimagining government
  • Have at least 10 years of experience in DEIB and people & culture work , particularly in the non-profit/charity/social impact space.
  • Have excellent organisational skills and experience with balancing competing priorities
  • Have high integrity, with the ability to hold confidential information and conversations tightly
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills, including feeling confident building new relationships, and negotiating challenging conversations with directness and kindness
  • Be highly self motivated and capable of taking initiative and working autonomously
  • Have an anticipatory stance, where you’re often able to sense what people need before they even know it themselves
  • Demonstrate an empathic, curious, and humble leadership approach
  • Be comfortable with ambiguity and the complexity of our work, where anything is possible but not always known in advance
  • Be comfortable with technology and systems thinking, with an eagerness to learn and teach others
  • Feel excited about joining an international organisation and be willing to make the effort needed to build relationships and stay connected with colleagues in different time zones, including working occasionally non-conventional hours
  • Be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and feel excited about the idea of working in a startup environment and with a small but growing team
  • Be committed to actively cultivating a culture of equity, inclusion, and belonging in the workplace
  • Be committed to exploring and experimenting with different ways of working and how to build our culture into something we are all proud of

At the Centre for Public Impact, we are committed to countering pay inequality and recently completed a global compensation benchmarking process to ensure that we’re paying our staff fairly and well for the roles that they hold and therefore, salaries at CPI are non-negotiable. Salary rises with experience, which includes work experience, educational experience, and lived experience.
