The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading policy research institution, generating evidence, strengthening research and related capacities in the African research and development ecosystem , and involves policies to inform action for health and development. Based in Africa and led by Africans, the Center has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, and a West Africa Regional Office (WARO), in Dakar, Senegal. The APHRC seeks to drive change through the development of strong African leadership in research and the promotion of evidence-informed decision-making in sub-Saharan Africa.
As part of its activities, APHRC is currently undertaking a study on the lived experiences of abortion in Togo as part of the “She Makes Her Safe Choice 2.0” program implemented in four countries in West and Central Africa. (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Togo). The research project aims to address barriers and opportunities in accessing safe abortion information, products and care. To carry out the daily activities of the project in Togo, APHRC is seeking to recruit a Country Coordinator . This will be a temporary appointment for a period of 8 months.
Roles and responsibilities
- Supervise and contribute to the overall management of project activities in Togo in liaison with the project manager.
- Lead the process of obtaining national ethics committee approval and research authorizations.
- Carry out documentary reviews to identify gaps, determine relevant research opportunities and define priority actions, as needed.
- Develop interview guides, training manuals and practical guides to use for data collection.
- Coordinate the recruitment, training and supervision of investigators.
- Coordinate survey work and take responsibility for data quality.
- Mobilize and inform the community about the research project.
- Prepare periodic activity and project reports.
- Participate in data management and analysis.
- Contribute to the scientific report, and prepare policy briefs and fact sheets based on project results.
- Participate in the dissemination of research findings and policy dialogue with appropriate audiences.
- Contribute to the writing of scientific articles.
- Perform other tasks as needed as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications, skills and experience
- Master’s degree in Anthropology, Sociology or other related disciplines with expertise in ethnography.
- At least one year of experience after obtaining the master’s degree, preferably in the field of research.
- Excellent research planning, monitoring and reporting skills.
- Good knowledge of IT and qualitative data processing software such as NVivo or Dedoose.
- Excellent command of French (native language) and excellent writing and analysis skills (particularly reports and manuscripts).
- Ability to work independently, meet deadlines and prioritize competing responsibilities.
- Experience in conducting field research and managing a research team
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work within a culturally diverse team.
- Work experience in urban and rural areas of Togo.
- Experience in sexual and reproductive health research, particularly abortion.
- Experience collecting and analyzing ethnographic data.
- Experience in stakeholder and community engagement.
