Communications Officer, Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby At DT Global

Project Background: The USAID Lukautim Graun Program (hereafter referred to as “LGP” or the “Program”) is a five-year $22 million initiative implemented by DT Global Inc., that supports the Government of Papua New Guinea and its citizens as they conserve the country’s increasingly threatened biodiversity. LGP curbs unsustainable natural resource use and damage to terrestrial and marine ecosystems by strengthening institutions, governance systems, and environmental regulations; engaging the private sector; and empowering traditional landowners, women, and communities to sustainably manage the country’s natural resources. The Program includes $3 million from the White House’s Women’s Global Development and Prosperity Initiative specifically focused on women’s economic empowerment in Papua New Guinea.

Position Summary: The Communications Officer will be based in Port Moresby and report directly to the Chief of Party and support other Program staff to ensure that all partnerships, and technical approaches and activities contribute to LGP’s overarching purpose and goals. Together with the COP, s/he ensures that LGP principles and priorities are coordinated and consistently applied in compliance with USAID and DT Global principles, policies, and procedures.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate relationships among communities, NGOs, private sector partners, and government agencies
  • Ensure compliance with USAID branding and marking policies
  • Work closely with program staff to ensure clear, up-to-date, and accurate program information.
  • Develop communications materials and coordinating implementation activities.
  • Support local and provincial awareness of biodiversity policies and laws as they relate to community empowerment.
  • Work with site-based staff and communities to develop conservation programming communications, including conservation enterprises.
  • Coordinate and manage updates to program documents and work with program technical staff to revise content, and edit for clarity, readability, consistency, and grammar.
  • Other duties consistent with the overall focus of the position as assigned by the Chief of Party

Education & Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA in Communications, community Outreach, or relevant field.
  • Five years of experience leading project communication strategies.
  • Experience and proven success adhering to USAID and/or other donor organization branding guidelines and being responsible for quality assurance across organizational marketing and communications materials.
  • Proven track record of writing articles and news items for publication.
  • Proven experience implementing internal and external communications initiatives, including behaviour change communications.
  • Experience working with digital media, social networks and websites.
  • Experience providing communications training, mentoring and advice to project partners and stakeholders.
  • Proven experience copy editing publications and documents for submission to the USAID and/or for publication.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with and implementation of gender focused approaches and gender inclusion into conservation programs.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and adherence to cultural sensitivity and diplomacy.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, Adobe, or other desktop publishing software required.
  • Excellent conceptual, oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in the English language required.
  • Legal authorization to work in Papua New Guinea.
