Youth Program Coordinator At International Rescue Committee


IRC Background:

Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. In the U.S., IRC assists refugees resettling here through 27 offices operating in 16 states. IRC resettles approximately 11,000 refugees annually and provides numerous program services to assist refugees from their arrival through citizenship. The IRC in Salt Lake City (IRC SLC) opened it office in 1994 and provides resettlement services through extended case management to newly arrived refugees for up to 18 months as well as over twenty different programs to educate and empower refugees.

Job Overview:

Under the supervision of the Youth Program Supervisor, the Youth Program Coordinator is responsible for administering existing youth services for school-aged new American youth ages 4-18. This includes coordinating school and community partnerships, completing school enrollments/orientations, increasing student access to supplementary support programs such as after-school and summer academic programs, and providing caregiver and school professional development. The Youth Program Coordinator will work with the Youth Program Supervisor to develop new innovative program areas and increase educational access for students within and outside IRC SLC’s programming.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that the Youth Programs consistently meet all established core resettlement services and grant outcomes and internal benchmarks established by IRC senior management, including documentation, case files, data tracking, client influence, and other areas of administrative compliance.
  • Prepare for the arrival of new students by proactively tracking arrival dates, scheduling intakes, and following up with families for enrollment appointments.
  • Gather documents and complete school enrollment applications for school-aged students.
  • Teach students how to walk or take the bus to school on their first (This requires early morning work as early as 6:00 a.m. depending on location)
  • Complete school enrollment for new arrival youth within 30 days of arrival and track in ETO and Podio databases
  • Maintain and develop partner relationships with school district staff, community partners, funders, and internal IRC RAI Youth Community of Practice through reoccurring meetings, resource sharing, collaborative initiatives, and program data tracking.
  • Coordinate with school district partners on the needs of students and their families
  • Provide supervision to direct service staff by providing ongoing individual supervision, coaching and goal setting, managing workload, and helping staff troubleshoot challenges. Directly supervise Youth Assistant and up to 2 interns per semester.
  • Supervise, support, and regularly communicate with volunteers, AmeriCorps members, and interns to conduct youth program services.
  • Maintain up-to-date, timely, and complete data tracking in Salesforce, Podio, ETO, UWORKS, and other databases.
  • Provide professional development training for educators and practitioners related to refugee and immigrant youth development, culturally responsive and trauma-informed practices, refugee caregiver engagement, etc.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with the Youth Program Supervisor on the status of youth programs, work collaboratively on program design, and provide timely reports on management issues.
  • Occasional grant writing on proposal development in collaboration with the Grants and other Resettlement teams.
  • Participate in all staff meetings, training, office support, reception coverage, and other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Undergraduate Degree or equivalent preferred; or equivalent work experience, preferably in a non-profit or social services agency environment
  • At least three years of professional experience with not-for-profit and/or youth experience or equivalent work experience.
  • At least two years of experience supervising staff preferred.
  • Excellent English written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills.
  • Strong relationship-building, diplomacy, and networking skills; effectively building internal and external relationships.
  • Proven ability to communicate and collaborate well with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills and proven ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to use the internet and other digital tools for data entry, research, and problem-solving.
  • Ability to be flexible and work well under pressure in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Ability to lift 35+ lbs. safely.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a personal, insured vehicle preferred.

Working Environment:**

  • Standard office environment with regular participation in community outreach, events, and field-based work within the service delivery area. ​
  • Regularly requires early mornings (6:30 am starts)
  • May require occasional weekend and/or evening work
