To eradicate polio from Afghanistan through high routine immunization coverage, high quality supplementary immunization activities (SIA), and a highly sensitive Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance system.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  •  Liaise with different EPI/PEI partners and ensure continued commitment of national/local authoritiesto the stated goals.
  •  Provide technical support to the Regional Emergency Operation Centre (REOC) and/or provincial health leadership for implementation of National Emergency Action Plan for Polio Eradication (NEAP).
  •  Collaborate with the preparation, implementation and monitoring of supplementary immunization activities including microplanning, training and monitoring.
  •  Coordinate and manage the surveillance technical activities(for AFP and VPI diseases) to ensure achievement/maintenance of certification standards.
  •  Collaborate with regional EPI team to streamline PEI’s contribution to EPI improvement.
  •  Analyse, systematize, and disseminate scientific and evidence-based technical information and knowledge; ensure accuracy and timeliness of poliosurveillance and SIA data.
  •  Strengthen the capacities of supervised WHO staff and contractors for the effective effective implementation of polio surveillance activities through on job mentoring/training and training workshops.
  •  Undertake regular field supervision visits to assess and evaluate the implementation of polio eradication activities, identify gaps and recommend corrective actions based on key performance indicators.
  •  Contribute to the transition and legacy plan for use of PEI resources contributing to EPI strengthening.
  •  Submit monthly reports to reflect progress achieved constraints and proposed actions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: University Degree in Medicine, public health, epidemiology, statistics or database management.

Desirable: Postgraduate degree or training in Public Health/Epidemiology/Public Health Administration/ Organization of health services or control of Communicable Diseases.

Experience

Essential: At least 5 years’ relevant experience in the development and implementation of immunization programmes at the national/sub-national level.

Desirable: Working experience in UN and/or other international organizations.

Skills

Sound technical knowledge on epidemiology and surveillance of vaccine preventable diseases; prevention and control measures; preparedness and response.

Ability to establish harmonious working relations with national counterparts and international colleagues.

Demonstrated knowledge of surveillance and monitoring systems complemented by skills in the field of statistical data collection, assessment, analysis and evaluation and monitoring

Remuneration comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 53,759 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable) and 30 days of annual leave.
