Hierarchical dependency

The Taxonomist Specialist reports his activities to the Program Officer and Coordinator ( a ) of the Project.

Field of specialization

Lead the taxonomic identification of botanical samples processed in herbarium, including drying, recording and assembly; as well as the development of training and supervision processes on collection activities, sample preparation, identification, registration and review of botanical information in databases.

Tasks and responsibilities

  •  Support and complement the training process for field brigades in the processes of botanical identification of species, collection and preparation of botanical samples, recording of information and interaction with herbaria.
  •  On-site accompaniment of field brigades in the process of collecting, preparing samples, identifying and recording information.
  •  Accompany the process of monitoring inventory information according to quality control procedures ( review of information collected in the field, review of physical forms and databases ).
  •  Receive botanical collections sent by field botanists / dendrologists and coordinate their proper processing.
  •  Process all samples collected in the field by botanists / dendrologists in accordance with the field notebooks of each collector and codes established for each UM. This activity will be carried out together with the other taxonomists and taxonomist assistants, working in the herbarium ( drying, registration, assembly, tabulation, identification, labeling and database ).
  •  Taxonomically identify the samples processed in the Herbarium, having as support the available collections and other inputs. Taxonomic identification will be at the family, genus and species level, mainly in those species that are easily identified, in the case of specimens with difficult identification, their identification up to gender will be accepted.
  •  Prepare, with the help of attendees, a database of field notebooks by collector and UM.
  •  Review the distribution and nomenclature of species identified in the field and that do not have botanical collections with information from global databases, specialized literature and consultation with specialists if necessary. Coordinate the acquisition of materials for the processing, assembly and storage of samples.
  •  Support in the healing and assembly of botanical samples in the herbarium.
  •  Together with the team of taxonomists and assistants, prepare a botanical database in the format of the herbarium, debug it and approve it. You will consider the hierarchy required by the herbarium database where identification is performed as the Darwin Core standard in INABIO – Herbarium Nacional del Ecuador ( SYMBIOTA base for example: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, specific, epithet, others ).
  •  Review of the nomenclature of the scientific names of the database in Open Foris Collect.
  •  Prepare progress and final reports on sample processing, together with the team of taxonomists and assistants.
  •  Provide assistance and follow-up to reports and analysis of the information generated by the ENF.
  •  Active participation in the monitoring and planning meetings of the ENF Core Team.
  •  Maintain periodic communication with the MAATE Technical Unit ( Part of the Monitoring Committee ) to obtain technical feedback in the implementation phases of ENF II.
  •  Participate when required in the meetings of the Monitoring Committee and Inter-institutional Scientific Committee
  •  Support activities required for the collection, training, processing and socialization of ENF II information and other actions required by the project.
  •  Preparation of blogs, monthly plans and travel plans and reports.

THE CANDIDATES WILL BE EVALUED IN ARRANGE TO THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

Minimum requirements

  •  Professional with third level degree in biological, forestry or related sciences, preferably specialty in systematic botany
  •  Professional experience of at least 3 years in the identification of botanical samples of forest species
  •  Practical command of the Spanish language level C
  •  National of Ecuador

Technical / functional skills

  •  Proven experience in floristic and forest inventories at the national level
  •  Experience in quality control processes in the collection and processing of data from botanical samples
  •  Experience in collecting, handling and treating specimens for the herbarium according to established standards
  •  Management of computer packages such as Microsoft Office and Free Software
  •  Good systematization capacity and generation of technical reports
  •  Aptitude to work under operating procedures of international organizations.
