The Corporate Services and Facilities Department (CSF) of the International Monetary Fund is looking to fill the position of Section Chief of the French Section in Language Services.

Under the supervision and guidance of the Head of Language Services and the Chief Translator, the Section Chief manages a section which provides translation and related services into French, mostly from English, but occasionally also from Spanish and from Portuguese.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  •  Plan, supervise, and coordinate the Section’s activities, including translation, revision, proofreading, and editing, as necessary to produce high-quality translations and publications.
  •  Supervise, motivate, evaluate, and assess performance of staff in the Section.
  •  Assign work and establish priorities to meet deadlines.
  •  Perform translation and revision, as necessary.
  •  Determine resource needs and actively participate in the recruitment of regular and contractual staff. Identify and recruit freelance translators as needed.
  •  Act as authority on language in the Section, including terminology.
  •  Ensure that appropriate quality control measures are established and applied.
  •  Liaise with IMF Departments and Offices to resolve translation-related issues.
  •  Evaluate the effectiveness of current language software systems. Assess future language-technology and training needs and formulate related strategies.

Qualifications:

E ducational development, typically acquired by the completion of an advanced university degree, or equivalent, in translation, linguistics, economics, or a related field, supplemented by a minimum of eight years of relevant work experience, is required. Alternatively, a minimum of two years of experience in a related position at Grade A12, or equivalent, is required.

Experience working in international institutions and familiarity with different areas of language operations will be considered an asset.

Target language: French. High level of written and spoken proficiency in French as a native language, with sensitivity to the different geographical variants of each language. Source languages: mostly English; ability to translate and revise translations from Spanish or Portuguese would be considered an asset.

Excellent organizational and management abilities. Strong interpersonal and communications skills; ability to inspire, lead and work as part of a team. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and officials at all levels in a multicultural environment.

High level of competence in an automated environment using computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools and translation management systems (TMS) for translation, revision, and administrative and supervisory functions. Deep understanding of language systems and ability to advise on language systems’ functionality and developments. Short-listed candidates may be required to take a written examination. Finalists will be required to participate in a panel interview.
