Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is an independent organisation for the defence and promotion of freedom,’ independence and pluralism in journalism. Its headquarters in Paris, its sections abroad, its offices in thirteen cities, including Berlin, London, Rio, Taipei, etc, Tunis and Washington and its network of correspondents in 130 countries give the’organization a strong capacity for mobilization and interpellation and a significant influence on the ground.

The RSF Latin America office was opened in Rio de Janeiro in 2015, with the aim of expanding RSF operations to the regional level. We are currently looking for a professional to work on issues of assistance to journalists and media and crisis response at regional level.

Responsible for assistance and crisis response

Main objective

The general mission of the crisis assistance and response officer is to provide holistic and rapid support to journalists and the media and to ensure the identification of emerging crises in order to better prepare the response to the crisis regional office of RSF.

In order to ensure greater security for journalists and media professionals, the person in charge of assistance and crisis response will be responsible for studying requests for assistance from journalists and the media, and to offer support in line with the needs of the identified local organizations. It will also be responsible for setting up a mechanism capable of responding as quickly as possible to the different types of threats that journalists and media professionals face online and offline, through a global and agile approach.

Attributions

  • Monitor assistance to journalists and media in the area
    • Receive and study requests from journalists and media that the office receives
    • Coordinate with the Paris assistance office the type of response to be provided
    • Follow the support provided by the office to journalists and media in the area
  • Monitor the situation and evolution of each country in the area and study potential threats and crisis triggers, in coordination with the director of RSF Brazil.
    • Geopolitical, socio-economic and environmental monitoring of the States of the zone
    • Organize missions in connection with the director of the office
    • Evaluation of the needs and possibilities of’actions
  • Set up an operational crisis mechanism for the area in particular :
    • Write a list of regional, national or local contacts and partners to be activated in case of crisis
    • Write a logistics protocol so that equipment and other equipment can be quickly transported in the event of a crisis
    • Draft and disseminate a clear procedure that establishes responsibilities, contacts to be established and activities to be undertaken
  • Disseminate and promote the actions of the office in terms of’assistance and crisis response

Profile

Degree in international relations, political science, security, social communication or related fields.

At least 5 years of experience in a similar project management position and/or in an emergency/humanitarian context

Experience in network animation and local partner management

Strong knowledge of security issues (digital and physical)

Knowledge of human rights, development cooperation, journalism and freedom of expression is a plus.

Knowledge of European donors and funding rules a plus

Conditions

Remuneration : R$ 10.500,00 in CDI

Benefits : R$ 660 Ticket restaurant + R$ 800 health coverage

Workplace : preferably in Rio de Janeiro, but applications for remote work will also be considered.
