1. General Background The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP) is co-hosted by UNEP in partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). These organizations serve as the joint host of the GGKP Secretariat (www.greengrowthknowledge.org) on behalf of the GGKP Steering Committee (UNEP, GGGI, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and the World Bank). The GGKP is a global network of over 90 international organisations, research institutes and non-governmental organisations focused on promoting a green economy transition by:
- identifying major knowledge gaps in green growth theory and practice and addressing these gaps by promoting collaboration and coordinated research; and
- using world-class knowledge management and communication tools to provide practitioners, policymakers, and other experts with opportunities to access, share, and utilize green growth policy analysis, guidance, information, and data. The GGKP provides its best practice knowledge management services through its three core platforms, the Green Policy Platform, the Green Industry Platform, and the Green Finance Platform. In addition, the GGKP is the executing agency for the Global Child Project of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) programme, “Financing Agrochemical Reduction and Management (FARM). The Green Industry Platform (GIP) has the objective to support uptake of resource efficiency measures, including sustainable chemicals, energy and waste management, water saving and materials efficiency, within industry and in particular by small and medium sized enterprises (SME). GIP has developed the I-GO Initiative to enable it provide customized resource efficiency knowledge support to industry stakeholders. 2. Purpose and Scope of Assignment The purpose of this assignment is to support the Green Industry Platform (GIP) with its implementation of the I-GO Initiative for industry stakeholders, in particular SMEs, as well as its overall coordination of value chain engagement for the GEF FARM programme, and includes the following tasks:
- Support the establishment of a value chain working group to provide GIP with a structured approach to engaging with key value chain actors and supporting exchange and collaboration between them;
- Coordinate engagement with the existing network of organisations supporting the deployment of the I-GO Initiative in target countries and actively support the expansion of the network within new GEF FARM target countries;
- Carry out backend and frontend testing of new developments to the I-GO Initiative tools with a focus on supporting their adaptation for new countries, including as required for FARM target countries;
- Support deployment of white label I-GO initiative tools by GIP partner organisations;
- Coordinate the regular sourcing of new resource efficiency knowledge products and support services, with a particular focus on those related to agrochemicals reduction and management, to ensure GIP knowledge libraries are up to date and relevant for industry stakeholders;
- Regularly review and upload resource efficiency knowledge products and support services to GIP knowledge libraries and identify knowledge gaps, in particular those related to agrochemicals reduction and management;
- Support GGKP’s overall work on mapping and engaging with circular economy initiatives, with a particular focus on those supporting SMEs;
- Assist in other operational tasks as necessary.
Qualifications/special skills
- Advanced (Master’s) degree or equivalent in Sustainable Development, Business Administration, International Affairs, Engineering, or closely related area. A Bachelor’s degree may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree in combination with two years of additional work experience.
- A minimum of three years of accumulated work experience that includes sustainable development related experience in working closely with business associations, SMEs, and development organisations is required.
- Experience of working in an intergovernmental organisation, and familiarity with online industry support tools is preferable.
LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language, especially French and/or Arabic, is an advantage.
