UNICEF works in some of the most difficult places in the world to reach the most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them realize their potential.

In 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for all.

And we never give up.

For each child, a champion

BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION

UNICEF’s fundamental mission is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does – in its programs, advocacy and operations. The equity strategy, which emphasizes the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to children’s rights into action.

For UNICEF, equity means that all children have the opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potential, without discrimination, bias or favoritism. To the extent that a child does not have the same opportunities in life – in its social, political, economic, civic and cultural dimensions – his rights are violated. It is more and more evident that investing in health, educating and protecting the most disadvantaged citizens of a society – by tackling inequality – will not only give all children the opportunity to realize their potential, but will also lead to sustained growth and stability in the countries.

That is why the emphasis on equity is so important. It accelerates progress towards the realization of the human rights of all children, which is the universal mandate of UNICEF, as emphasized in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, while supporting the equitable development of nations.
