Contract Information

The type of contract will be fixed term of 1 year with the possibility of further extension subject to satisfactory performance and availability of project funds.

Salary

US$ 64,121 net per annum, plus post adjustment (currently US$ 48,026.63). Salary is free of income tax in the United Kingdom

Purpose of the Post

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager of a GHG (Greenhouse Gas) specific major Project and overall supervision of the Head, Projects Implementation, in the Department of Partnerships and Projects (DPP) the incumbent will provide high level technical guidance and advisory services and undertake support of project management responsibilities.

This Vacancy Notice supports the establishment of the IMO Projects Roster. The Roster will be a list of pre-vetted, qualified candidates, for the purpose of fast-tracking recruitment processes as positions become available. After a rigorous selection process, successful candidates will be placed in the respective Roster for a period of 24 months. While placement on the Roster does not guarantee a position, candidates placed on the Roster will be matched when a relevant position becomes available and be invited to a final interview.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Support the Project Manager with the Project Coordination Unit (PCU) and provide technical support on GHG issues to the wider project team; 2. Monitoring project deliverables in specific technical areas, organize respective meetings and report back to the Project Manager. 3. Provide technical support for on-the ground work in beneficiary countries, such as pilots and/or trainings to be undertaken by the project.

Technical advisory support 1. Support with technical expertise in GHG matters, including technical knowledge on alternative fuels, operational measures and key IMO regulations, standards the implementation of the project;

2. Provide technical assistance to the projects implementing partners to establish and undertake technically solid GHG emissions reduction related trainings and/or technology demonstration pilots;

3. Oversee and if needed input relevant GHG technical, specific project deliveries, monitor related activities and report back to Project Manager;

4. Participate as a speaker at relevant conferences, exhibitions and other outreach activities representing the Project;

5. Provide inputs for all technical reports and publications prepared by the project;

6. Follow discussions in relevant IMO Committees and Sub- committees such as MEPC, ISWG and meetings of other relevant UN entities (UNFCCC) and provide short summary of key negotiation issues, present these regularly to project team and extended DPP GHG portfolio teams, coordinating projects follow-up to regulatory developments;

7. Undertake any other duties as required for the effective management of the Project or the Department;

8. Follow discussions in relevant IMO Committees and Sub- committees such as MEPC, ISWG and meetings of other relevant UN entities (UNFCCC) and provide short summary of key negotiation issues, present these regularly to the project team and extended DPP GHG portfolio teams, coordinating projects follow-up to regulatory developments.

Professional Experience

Minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience in project management or policy work related to maritime decarbonization, climate change/GHG matters is essential.

Experience in supporting the execution of technical projects in developing countries in this domain, along with experience in an international organization/setting is an asset.

Education

Advanced university degree in environmental or maritime engineering, civil engineering, marine science, maritime law/maritime affairs, international relations, climate change, energy or related fields is essential.

Language Skills

Proficiency in English, both written and oral, is essential. Working knowledge and ability to understand complex technical issues in other official languages of the United Nations will be an asset.

Other Skills

Knowledge of the work of IMO and particularly of MARPOL Annex VI and the IMO GHG Strategy is essential.

Good technical knowledge and understanding of current ongoing negotiations in IMO, inter alia on ambition levels, mid-long term measures, as well as developing country, SIDS (Small Island Developing States), LDCs (Least Developed Countries) needs is essential.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is essential.

Knowledge of issues and challenges related to the implementation of IMO conventions in developing countries would be an asset.
