Medical doctor At International Organization for Migration


Under the overall supervision of the Director, Coordination Office for the Mediterranean, Chief of Mission in Italy and Malta, in coordination with the Project Manager and the direct supervision of the Medical Focal Point the successful candidate will be responsible for the management of PMHA in Lampedusa and the medical escorting to the different final destinations.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  • Organize and perform PMHA in Lampedusa to fulfil the technical requirements in the areas of:
  1. Medical examinations;
  2. Infectious diseases screening;
  3. Referrals for treatment;
  4. Pre-departure procedures and medical movements;
  5. Documentation, certification and information transmission; and,
  6. Other technical areas as may be required.
  • Perform, if needed, the medical escort duties when required to ensure migrants receive continued care throughout all phases of migration (before departure, during the journey and at the final destination);
  • Maintain the medical equipment in Lampedusa as provided by IOM Italy so that they meet the professional standards of quality and safety and are sufficient and adequate for provision of the services;
  • Ensure that the Medical Focal Point is informed about the health activities;
  • Ensure proper reporting and management of incidents according to the Guidance Note for Incident Management;
  • Collaborate with the Medical Focal Point to incorporate additional public health interventions, if necessary. Interventions may include surveillance for communicable diseases, outbreak preparedness and response, health education and health promotion, public health services for host communities, liaison with public health institutions and other activities;
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of migration health data in accordance with the IOM Data Protection Principles;
  • Organize systematic collection, processing and analyses of migration health data according to guidelines. Ensure data quality. Provide periodic, as well as ad-hoc reporting to the Medical Focal Point for migration health activities;
  • Provide oversight and coordinate the procurement of medical equipment, medications and other medical supplies in coordination with the Medical Focal Point and the resource management unit;
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

  • University degree in Medicine from an accredited academic institution with at least 3 years of professional experience; or,
  • University degree in Medicine from an accredited academic institution plus Master’s Degree in Community or Public Health, Medical Specialization in Infectious Diseases, Tropical Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Aerospace medicine or other related fields from an accredited academic institution with 3 years of relevant professional experience.

Experience

  • Working experience in the domain of medicine, 2 years of which is continuous clinical experience (either in clinical set-ups or immigration / resettlement medical examinations or health assessments);
  • Experience in TB, migration health or other communicable disease control programmes among refugees and migrants in an international organization, UN agency or hospital;
  • Experience with aerospace medicine;
  • International experience in global public health issues, emergencies and policies.

  • Previous experience in a camp-like environment.

Languages

  • Fluency in Italian and English is required (oral and written);
  • Knowledge of French would be considered as an asset.
