The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) offers the opportunity for a motivated and highly skilled junior professional to join the EFTA Statistical Office in Luxembourg.

EFTA is an intergovernmental organisation working for the promotion of free trade and economic integration to the benefit of its four Member States: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. The EFTA Secretariat provides services to the EFTA States and has offices in Geneva, Brussels and Luxemburg. The Headquarters in Geneva services the EFTA Council and provides services for policy development, negotiations and implementation of free trade and cooperation agreements with countries outside the European Union.

The EFTA Statistical Office (ESO) in Luxembourg functions as a liaison office between the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) and the EFTA National Statistical Institutes (NSIs), coordinating cooperation in the field of statistics both within and outside the European Economic Area (EEA).

The Junior Professional programme at the EFTA Secretariat is open to nationals of the EFTA Member States (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland).

Role Description

ESO deals with international statistical cooperation both within and outside the framework of the EEA Agreement, within which statistics is a separate policy area. ESO’s main objective is to promote the full inclusion of the EFTA States in the continuously evolving European Statistical System. Although ESO’s focus is mainly on legal and institutional affairs and dissemination, some smaller statistical publications are also published over the year.

The ESO Junior Professional’s main tasks are to identify new legal acts to be incorporated into the EEA Agreement, to liaise with the National Statistical Institutes of the EFTA Member States and the Commission (Eurostat), and to monitor and report on the inclusion of EFTA data in Eurostat publications. In addition, the JP is expected to provide general assistance to the EFTA Secretariat and to the EFTA Member States on various issues concerning statistics and in the daily work of the ESO team.

Essential Skills

  •  University degree in a relevant discipline (Law, Economics, Political or Social Science, International Relations, etc.) or degree due prior to 1 September 2023.
  •  Excellent drafting skills in English.
  •  Good understanding of and interest in statistics.
  •  Analytical mind and attention to detail.
  •  Flexibility, team player spirit and ability to take on a wide variety of tasks, both complex and more basic.

Ideal Skills

  •  Work experience of 1-2 years in a governmental service and knowledge of EEA Agreement.
  •  Statistical skills (with basic macroeconomic terms).
  •  Recent experience from international statistical cooperation and basic knowledge of the European Statistical System (ESS) would be an asset.

In the interest of offering this valuable experience to the broadest pool of individuals possible, former ESA, EFTA Court and EFTA Secretariat Junior Professional and trainees will not be eligible to apply for this programme.
