The Opportunity – EHU Field Hospital Operating Theatre Nurse

Post location: Gaza Field Office

Contract Duration and Level of Effort: 3 months with possible extension

ROLE PURPOSE:

The Operating Theatre Nurse will work with the Clinical Lead in Gaza to comply with nursing standard operating procedures for surgical cases, taking responsibility for nursing activities within the response, under the guidance of the Clinical Lead and Team Leader, and support functions. This will include ensuring that the activities of the field hospital team are integrated into Save the Children’s emergency response. They will work alongside the rest of the nursing and midwifery team to meet quality standards in nursing activities and may support other services as required. They will have close communication with the Anesthetist as well as other specialists and physicians.

SCOPE OF ROLE:

Reports to: Field Hospital Clinical Lead (or designated other).

Staff reporting to this post: TBC (To be confirmed).

Budget Responsibilities: None.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

This position will manage the day-to-day field hospital nursing activities within the operating theatre (OT).

This will involve managing supplies and medication within the operating theatre as well as ensuring infection control and prevention measures as well as providing direct support to surgical patients before, during and after surgery.

Nursing activities for Operating Theatre:

  • Ensure the preparation of material and equipment (checking quantity, quality and functionality), in the operating theatre.
  • Ability to ensure the availability and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Carry out the reception, transport of the patient from the preparation room to the operating theatre and ensure their installation for surgery.
  • Ensure that safe surgery steps are carried out in accordance with World Health Organization standards.
  • Checking patient identification, type of surgery.
  • Counting of compresses, gauze and sharps before and after surgery.
  • Assists the surgeon and anesthesiologist during the operation, anticipating their needs, to facilitate their work and assisting throughout the process.
  • Ability to identify and prepare all surgical sets.
  • Proficient in circulating nursing functions (organization of work within an operating theatre).
  • Able to assist the surgeon during the operation.
  • Knowledge of anesthetic drugs for local anesthesia
  • Check patient’s vital parameters with the nurse anesthetist
  • Organizes patient transport and set up from the operating room to the recovery room and performs and/or supervises all postoperative activities.
  • Collection of used material, cleaning and disinfection of the operating room, restocking of all equipment and material), in order to prepare the operating room for the next surgical procedure or any emergency.
  • Apply and follow hygiene, sterilization, asepsis and disinfection protocols and procedures at all times, in pre-, during and post-operative activities, to ensure safe surgeries.
  • Availability of waste containers and sharps container and proper disposal of waste.
  • Checking that no material or needle is left in the surgical towels.
  • Placing instruments in the soaking container after surgery, taking instruments/linen to the sterilization unit, and participating in this process.
  • Supervise and train nursing assistants and cleaners following IPC protocols.
  • Able to lead and correctly carry out the surgical sterilization process.

In Recovery Room

  • Maintain bed status and manage bed occupancy.
  • Making rounds of the patients in recovery room, monitoring the condition of patients.
  • Take vital signs according to the follow-up indicated by the physician on duty and check the general condition of the patient, properly recording everything in the patient’s file and reporting any eventuality to the physician on duty.
  • Monitoring and recording of Early Warning Scores, early recognition of patient deterioration and escalation as per existing pathways.
  • Administer medications and collect samples for laboratory analysis indicated by the physicians and correctly record these activities in the clinical file
  • Identify complicated cases or those showing clinical deterioration and inform the physician for evaluation.
  • Ensure proper care upon discharge from the Recovery room to the following wards and perform patient handover appropriately.
  • Ensure proper documentation of patient care.

General

  • Assist the physician and clinical lead as requested.
  • Will keep and maintain records of dressings, medications, medical supplies and other duties.
  • Performs a daily count of medications and OT/surgical supplies used to ensure that minimum stock is maintained, and that medications and supplies are ordered from the pharmacy and med log/warehouse as needed.
  • Ensure that high levels of infection prevention and control are maintained by monitoring the level of cleanliness of the unit.
  • Assist in providing weekly medication consumption and unit activity reports.
  • Participate in the preparation of the weekly team report when requested.
  • Will assist in emergency response to disease outbreaks as needed.
  • Ensure that all consultations with patients are conducted in a dignified and appropriate manner, in accordance with the standards and principles established by the Save the Children
  • Ensure that systems are in place to strictly maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ensure that patient records and clinical records are completed in accordance with the requirements of Save the Children and the Ministry of Health in country.
  • Ensure the use of established reporting formats for data collection, analysis and reporting of daily and weekly activities to the clinical lead as required and follow reportable disease protocols as directed by the clinical lead.
  • Ensure accountability activities as per protocol and beneficiary feedback.
  • Document and notify any medical incidents or near misses according to Save the Children International procedures (using Datix system or manual notification).
  • Participate in clinical review meetings and clinical trainings to ensure quality assurance and continuous professional development.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the team leader and clinical lead.
  • Comply with Save the Children policies and practices regarding child protection, code of conduct, health and safety, equal opportunity and other relevant policies and procedures.

In order to be successful, you will bring/have:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Essential nursing qualification or specialization. Desired bachelor’s in nursing
  • Registered Nurse or Nurse-midwife, licensed by a recognized institute in his/her country of residence.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential

  • Arabic speaker in a clinical setting
  • Minimum of three months’ work/volunteering in Field hospital or Low middle Income Countries (LMIC) in a complex humanitarian setting
  • Ability and willingness to travel to remote and insecure locations for periods of time and on short notice.
  • Experience working in secondary care units and in surgical units as an operating theatre nurse (circulating and scrub nurse), perioperative care, and perioperative care. Strong communication skills, with an excellent level of spoken and written English.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to work and maintain a positive team dynamic in an insecure environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural environment and establish harmonious and effective working relationships both inside and outside the organization.
  • Ability to reflect and learn from personal and program performance and act on lessons learned.

Desirable

  • Previous experience of NGO work in humanitarian settings.
  • Experience of living or working a conflict environment
  • Experience of working in a district hospital or higher level of care in the operating theatre, recovery room, perioperative care, surgical sterilization.
  • Experience in other relevant area: general practice, general medicine, or nutrition
  • Strong knowledge of Save the Children systems and ways of working.
  • Experience working in treatment centers/units, secondary care units and emergency medical management.
