IMF-FCDO Macroeconomic Research in Low-Income Countries Project

Job Summary

The Climate and Development Policies Division (CD) in the Strategy, Policy and Review Department (SPR) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is looking to hire a contractual (1 year, renewable) Economist/Senior Economist under the IMF-FCDO Macroeconomics Research in Low-Income Countries (MRLIC) project. The selected candidate will contribute to both analytical and operational work of the IMF. In particular, the candidate is expected to advance the research agenda on macroeconomic policies in low-income countries (LICs) using quantitative methods, for example, in the areas of climate change, migration and remittances, and infrastructure and human development. The candidate is also expected to work closely with IMF country teams to support their engagement with country authorities. The candidate will draft research papers, apply their research to IMF country work, present their work in conferences, and develop toolkits, among others.

Qualifications

In addition to meeting the requirements set forth in the IMF job standards below, applicants should have a strong background in quantitative macroeconomics. Strong skills in conducting macroeconomic modelling, with proficiency in working languages of scientific computation (MATLAB, Fortran, etc.) are required. Knowledge of high-performance computation will be desirable, and experience with empirical econometric analysis (using Stata, R, etc.) a plus. The candidate should also be a dynamic and highly motivated economist, with proven ability to work both independently and within a team. Specifically, the selection of applicants will be primarily based on the following criteria: 1) Strong work experience with quantitative macroeconomic models, both in modeling and computation

2) Demonstrated data-management skills

3) Strong written and oral communication skills, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with peers

IMF Job Standards: For Grade A11, educational development, including and/or supplemented by work experience, typically acquired through the completion of considerable graduate work in economics, is required.

For Grade A12, in addition to the training and experience for Economist/A11, a minimum of two years of professional economist experience at Grade A11, or successful completion of the Economist Program and an offer of a regular appointment to the Fund staff, or equivalent outside experience, is required.

For Grade A13, in addition to the training and experience for Economist/A12, a minimum of two years of professional economist experience at Grade A12, or equivalent, is required.

For Grade A14, in addition to the training and experience for Economist/A13, a minimum of three years of professional economist experience at Grade A13, or equivalent, is required.

This is a one-year contractual appointment. Contractual appointments at the IMF are renewable for up to four years of cumulative contractual service, pending incumbent’s performance, budget availability, and continuous business need.
