Job Description

Background

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs ( OCHA ) is a department of the United Nations Secretariat. Its mission is to mobilize and coordinate humanitarian action effectively in partnership with national and international actors, so as to alleviate human suffering, to advocate for the rights of populations in need of assistance, to promote disaster preparedness and prevention and to facilitate the establishment of durable solutions.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. ) Design, develop and manage databases, spreadsheets and other data tools

  •  Understand, document and guarantee the quality of high-value humanitarian data to ensure its accuracy, consistency and comparability; consolidate operational information according to a regular schedule to support analysis

2. ) Review and update databases

  •  Ensure that data is uniquely identified and that data is internally consistent
  •  Collect, store and manage Geo-Spatial Information and Data – Identify partners or GIS contacts from various organizations in order to have the information necessary to establish up-to-date databases.
  •  Clean, analyze and manage data before producing primary and / or secondary analyzes ;

3. )Support and provide technical support to the main sector managers as well as partners ;

  •  Provide technical support for the monthly meetings of the Information Managers Working Group of OCHA partner agencies
  •  Strengthen the capacity of partners to collect gender-disaggregated data, stimulate the prior adoption of tools and support capacity development through continuous supervision and training for members of the humanitarian community ;

4. ) Participate in the development and revision of standard data

  •  Provide assistance in the application of these standards in local systems and processes ;
  •  Participate in the development, implementation and management of new indicators, as well as the accompanying data, to be included in common humanitarian databases

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Secondary school leaving certificate is required

Diploma in information management, information systems, computer science or a related field is an asset.

Experience:

Good command of the IT tool ( Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Power Query, etc )

Professional experience

  •  5 years of minimum professional experience, either in information management, information systems, web page management, data management, data visualization or any other related field.
  •  Experience in managing information in the event of disasters or complex emergencies is required.

Relevant experience within the United Nations system is desirable.

  •  Relevant experience in the conduct, management and design of field work and data collection as well as primary data analysis
  •  Cartography experience, an asset ;
  •  Being able to work in a pressurized environment

Mastering French is required and a good knowledge of English is an asset
