Mission and objectives

The Islamic Republic of Iran is a middle-income country experiencing rapid changes and a demographic transition with an increasingly large young population. With UNFPA support since 1970, progress has been marked on maternal health and the management of population data. Today, programmes support high-quality integrated reproductive health care, including for HIV/AIDS and other vulnerable groups, and strengthened reproductive health responses in emergencies. UNFPA also supports the government to address emerging population issues, including youth, ageing, female-headed households, and urbanization and migration. Our work in sexual and reproductive health focuses on pregnant mothers and at-risk populations. Together with the Ministry of Health and Medical Education (MOHME), we aim to improve maternal health, promote natural delivery, and decrease maternal mortality in provinces with the highest risks, including among Afghan refugees and those affected by natural disasters. We also join hands with various departments within the ministry in building capacities of care providers and enhancing the existing systems in counseling, life skills training, STI/HIV prevention, and in promoting health and family values for at-risk populations, including women, men, adolescents and youth.

Context

In line with the national Strategic Plan on HIV prevention and the Ministry of Health and Medical Education (MOHME) programme, and under the comprehensive prevention programme funded by Norway, an online volunteer has been requested to support research on SRH and HIV/STI prevention among adolescents and youth, in order to strengthen the HIV prevention programmes for these most at-risk populations. The lack of data and information on HIV status of key populations, especially the young population, as well as the information about their access to services, is problematic for any planning, programming and resource mobilization to effectively respond to the needs of the key populations, brought forth the urgency to conduct a study and provide a better picture of the situation for the government of Iran and UNFPA for better programming in interventions
