Consultant, Climate-Smart Agriculture At CAUSE Canada


CAUSE Canada will begin a new school feeding program in September 2024 in Sierra Leone. As part of this program, it is seeking a consultant to support a Sierra Leone Agronomist to train local female farmer cooperatives and participants in a school garden, on climate-smart agriculture (CSA) to support food security.

CAUSE Canada expects to retain the consultant for two years, with most of the work occurring in the first year. Year two will have a greater focus on learning from results, planning, and sustainability of the practices.

Expected deliverables:

  1. An initial meeting with the Canadian and Sierra Leone staff to discuss local farming practices.
  2. Analysis of current practices of local farmers and identification of methods for improving the practices to become more climate-smart.
  3. Development of a framework and training for the Sierra Leone agronomist on climate-smart techniques.
  4. Monthly meetings with the agronomist during the first year, to discuss progress, challenges, and learnings, and adjust.
  5. In year 2, the consultant will be expected to provide contributions to the annual planning cycle based on learnings and to meet with the agronomist quarterly.

Duration of initial contract: 20 days (over 2 years)

Required qualifications of the consultant/survey team leader

  • Knowledgeable in designing and developing projects on or with a component on climate-smart agriculture in the low-resourced countries/contexts.
  • Experienced in building capacity and working in partnership with local agricultural specialists.
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills including fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team-oriented multi-cultural environment
  • Demonstrated professional level of attention to detail and accuracy of work.
  • Experienced in working with limited resources to help build capacity for sustainable climate-smart agriculture.
  • Ability to work independently, with initiative and minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in working with West African partners.
