Who we are: Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V. ( www.thejohanniter.org ) is a German Christian non-governmental organization dedicated to humanitarian assistance in the field of first aid, ambulance service, social service programs and other projects in the medical and social fields. The headquarters are in Berlin, Germany. Johanniter International Assistance is the operational unit for humanitarian aid, development cooperation and emergency relief, implementing and supporting projects in health, livelihoods, and disaster preparedness and emergency response. Internationally, JUH carries out projects in more than 20 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America/Caribbean.

Context

Johanniter has been registered as an international NGO in Ecuador since 2009, with a permanent office and staff in Quito. In Latin America it also has an office in Bogotá (Colombia).

The priority sectors of the projects are: livelihoods, health, and disaster preparedness and emergency response. Gender and climate change are cross-cutting.

This consultancy involves a training process on gender and new masculinities for 40 project participants:

  • “Roots and Seeds: Mothers, adolescents and young people accessing SRH and GBV services in Ecuador and Colombia”. Sector: Health (sexual and reproductive health); GBV prevention and care. Implementing partner: Federation of Women of Sucumbíos (FMS). Financier: ADH / DWR. Geographic area: Sucumbíos Province (Ecuador); Ipiales (Colombia). Implementation period: 05/15/2024 – 05/14/2025.

What we need

The Johanniter (JUH) office in Ecuador is looking for the services of a qualified individual consultant to carry out a training process on New Masculinities and Gender in Sucumbíos (Ecuador).

Consulting Objectives:

  • Promote understanding of new masculinities and develop, with 40 men participating in the LAM0101 project, a training process for understanding traditional masculinities and their impact on gender relations, sexual and reproductive health, and gender-based violence.
  • Promote co-responsibility in gender equality by raising awareness about new masculinities, helping participating men to assume active roles in gender equality, especially in the area of ​​sexual and reproductive health and the prevention of gender violence.

Main products of the Consulting:

  1. Work plan with the schedule of activities for the consultancy period.
  2. Initial diagnosis: A report identifying participants’ current perceptions and behaviors regarding traditional masculinities and gender. The diagnosis will be supported by the project’s implementing partner in Colombia (PROFAMILIA), which will require coordination via Zoom.
  3. Training plan: Methodological proposal with a participatory approach, theoretical and practical content of the workshops, and pedagogical tools to be used. Conducting face-to-face workshops with 40 participants from the communities (20 adults and 20 members of youth groups) on new masculinities and their impact on sexual and reproductive health and gender violence. The workshops will take place at the FMS headquarters in Lago Agrio. The following topics are suggested: emotional containment (circles for men), assertive communication, + conflict resolution, also considering the results of the diagnosis carried out jointly with PROFAMILIA.
  4. Preliminary report which must include:-Progress of the Work Plan.-Presentation of initial diagnosis results with recommendations.-Progress of the training plan.*The report should not exceed 10 pages (without attachments).
  5. Final Report: A guide document that compiles the topics covered in the workshops and sessions and evaluates the training process. To do so, it is essential to include pre- and post-tests before and after the workshops to measure the level of impact, as well as the attitudes and behaviors that have changed. The report should include testimonies and feedback from participants to measure the impact of the workshops and obtain quantitative and qualitative inputs. The report will include conclusions and recommendations that will serve the JUH and FMS organizations as input for learning and/or replication in future projects.

Profile and required skills

  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Law, Social Sciences or related field; Master’s and/or specialization in gender.
  • Training and/or specialization in new masculinities. Solid practical experience in new masculinities.
  • Practical experience in training: Minimum 5 years of experience leading workshops or training on gender issues and with groups of men.
  • Experience in working with diverse groups, especially in vulnerable contexts and at the community level.
  • Proven experience in developing content and participatory dynamics that facilitate introspection and behavioral change.
  • Ability to evaluate the impact of training.
  • Knowledge of the context of the project intervention area (Sucumbíos). Experience working with indigenous peoples and nationalities is desirable.
  • Mastery of Spanish, written and spoken. Good level of English is desirable.
  • Ability to handle Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work independently and advance tasks as quickly as required.
  • Availability to travel to the field (project areas in the Province of Sucumbíos) and hold face-to-face meetings in Quito.
