Communication and Nutrition Consultant At Association of Volunteers for International Service


1. Context

AVSI Venezuela is a Venezuelan non-profit organization, created in 2022, to improve the living conditions of people in vulnerable situations. We are a local organization that has been operating in Venezuela since 2000 and linked to the international context through a partnership with the AVSI Foundation, a non-profit, non-governmental organization that supports 355 development cooperation projects in 42 countries, with headquarters in Italy and which promoted the creation of AVSI Venezuela.

The School Meals Program and the Disability Inclusion Program contribute to ensuring food security in pre-school, primary, mixed and special education centers. In addition, these programs promote the inclusion of people with disabilities and strengthen the capacities of participants, improving access and permanence in schools. AVSI implements both projects as a partner of the World Food Program (WFP). Communication and Nutrition Consultants are responsible for the delivery of communication materials, as well as the training of school staff, family representatives and community members. All activities will focus on community interests, and communication products will be delivered and key messages will be disseminated to promote healthy eating habits and foster the importance of proper nutrition.

2. Object

With this announcement, AVSI Venezuela selects six (6) Communication and Nutrition Consultants who will be responsible for disseminating WFP’s messages and communication materials to participants, as well as providing training to school staff, family representatives and community members to meet the standards established by WFP. They will receive training and guidelines provided by the Communication and Nutrition Specialist, in order to socialize and ensure that school staff and beneficiaries are aware of the community feedback mechanism. They will also carry out activities on topics of interest to the communities, guarantee socialization for families about its benefits, preparation and adequate consumption of Super Cereal Plus. In addition, they will prepare posters, deliver communication products and guarantee the dissemination of key messages through different channels, according to the guidelines established by WFP.

3. Description of functions

For schools with take-home school meals:

  • Receive training and guidelines from the Communication and Nutrition Specialist on socialization topics and/or other planned activities.
  • Disseminate and ensure that school staff, beneficiaries and families are aware of the community feedback mechanism.
  • Conduct socializations and/or activities on topics of interest to the communities (information about the program, nutrition, safe water, etc.) for school personnel and families during distribution.
  • Ensure that Super Cereal Plus is distributed through social media for families about its benefits, preparation and proper consumption, and that communication products and water purification tablets are delivered with key messages for its use.
  • Create posters, deliver communication products and ensure the dissemination of key messages through different channels (physical and digital), among other activities.
  • Collect the information and verification means necessary for reporting on nutrition and communication activities according to the guidelines of the Communication and Nutrition Specialist.

For schools with a take-home family basket option:

  • Receive training and guidelines from the Communication and Nutrition Specialist on socialization topics and/or other planned activities.
  • Disseminate and ensure that school staff, beneficiaries and families are aware of the community feedback mechanism.
  • Conduct socializations and/or activities on topics of interest to the communities (information about PCE, nutrition, safe water, etc.) with school personnel and families during the distribution.
  • Collect the information and verification means necessary for reporting on nutrition and communication activities according to the guidelines of the Communication and Nutrition Specialist.

4. Key requirements and qualifications

  • Education: TSU in Nutrition and Dietetics, Communication, Education, Psychology or related fields.
  • Experience: minimum two (02) years of work experience, preferably in food programs, social projects or community organizations such as grassroots organizations, neighborhood associations, etc. (must not be a political activist).
  • Food Hygienic Handling Course and Health Certificate (essential).

5. Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Social sensitivity for community work with different actors, which includes continuous support of processes.
  • Creativity and proactivity.
  • Efficient handling of Microsoft Office® at an intermediate level.

6. Coordination of work

The Communication and Nutrition Consultants will report directly to the Communication and Nutrition Specialist and the Operations Coordinator based on the guidelines issued by the LATEAM Regional Office, the AVSI Foundation Headquarters in Italy and the World Food Programme (WFP).

7. Type of contract

  • Temporary contract, to work specific days per month that will be communicated in advance.
  • Start date: October 1, 2024.
  • Completion date: July 31, 2025.

8. Workplace

The work will be carried out in the AVSI Venezuela office in Yaracuy with frequent trips to the municipalities of Manuel Monge and Bolívar, so residing in San Felipe or nearby cities is highly desirable. Knowledge of the territory will be valued.
