Organisational Setting and ReportingThis position is located in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the Division for Sustainable Development Goals, Integrated Policy Analysis Branch. The focus of this position is supporting the Division in the preparations of activities for the 2023 SDG Summit and the Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which will be held in 2024 in Antigua and Barbuda. Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Associate Programme Management Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
- Works with key clients, including representatives from all stakeholder groups and from the Department for Global Communications, to facilitate outreach and stakeholder engagement activities of the SDG Summit and the 2024 SIDS Conference; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and recommends corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.
- Carries out basic research on selected aspects of programmes, operations and other activities, etc., to include collecting, analyzing and presenting data and other information gathered from diverse sources.
- Provides substantive support for project coordination, including the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
- Provides administrative and substantive support to consultative and other meetings and,conferences, etc., by proposing agenda topics, identifying and proposing participants, preparing background documents and presentations, handling logistics including for virtual meetings on Zoom, MS Teams or WebEx, preparing statements by senior staff to meetings related to outreach and stakeholder engagement for the SDG Summit and the SIDS Conference, etc.
- Participates in consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., including provision of substantive and administrative support, data collection, etc.
- Coordinates activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and preparation of related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.).
- Performs other duties as required.

EducationA first-level university degree in business administration, management, economics or a related field is required.
Work ExperienceA minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in project/programme management, administration or related area, is required. No experience is required for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme examination (YPP) or the G to P Examination (G to P). Experience in supporting large intergovernmental meetings and conferences, including away from Headquarters, is required. Experience in preparing and supporting virtual events through different online tools, such as Zoom, MS Teams, and WebEx, is required. Experience in interacting with senior management and the diplomatic community is desirable.
LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other UN official languages is an advantage.
AssessmentEvaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
Special Notice
- This position is temporarily available starting as soon starting possible until 31 December 2023, with a possibility of extension. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
- Pursuant to section 7.11 of ST/AI/2012/2/Rev.1, candidates recruited through the young professionals programme who have not served for a minimum of two years in the position of their initial assignment are not eligible to apply to this position.
