Programme Lead – Serious Violations and International Crimes At Lawyers for Justice in Libya

Job description: Programme Lead – Serious Violations and International Crimes

Job title: Programme Lead – Serious Violations and International Crimes

Location: London, United Kingdom [remote option may be considered]

Duration: Permanent,

Full time Start date: 1 December 2024

We are a small, dedicated team that is passionate about what it is doing and works hard to ensure our organisation punches above its weight. We are looking for an enthusiastic, positive, collaborative and hard-working Programme Lead to oversee our work on serious human rights violations and international crimes. Together with the Director of Programmes, you will lead the Serious Violations and International Crimes Programme (the Programme) by organising its project work and allocating resources, and lead LFJL’s strategy in this Programme area to deliver high quality work.

Overview:

Lawyers for Justice in Libya (LFJL) is a Libyan and international independent non-governmental organisation, committed to achieving justice and respect for human rights in Libya. Our vision is of a Libya which embodies the values and principles of human rights and the rule of law and is a society committed to justice. We seek transformative justice in Libya through our work across four programmes: Serious Violations and International Crimes; Daily Injustices and Institutional Change; Equality and Non-Discrimination; Movement Building.

We are looking for an organised, agile, pro-active and people-oriented leader to fulfil this role. Working together with the Director of Programmes and collaborating purposefully with the three other Programme leads, you will orchestrate the planning, coordination and implementation of programmatic actions.

The Programme on Serious Violations and International Crimes

Serious crimes – including crimes against humanity, war crimes, torture and other ill-treatment, sexual violence, extrajudicial-killing, enforced disappearance – and human rights violations are committed with impunity across Libya, with victims being prevented from accessing justice. Together with our partners, we strategically engage domestic, regional and international accountability mechanisms to combat the culture of impunity. We use our Justice and Accountability Archive and Database to preserve our and our partners’ documentation and to support victims and survivors, including marginalised groups, in seeking justice, including reparation. We will ensure that victims and survivors are leading their own journeys to obtaining justice and dignity, and provide access to, or cover referrals to, trusted third parties for holistic support such as for psycho-social, educational and medical support.

Recognising the constraints of traditional accountability and advocacy methods within existing international frameworks, LFJL’s future ‘accountability and justice incubator’ will nurture creative solutions to intractable problems and to support new approaches and thinking that engage with the idea of changing a flawed system or working outside of it. This will include climate justice and novel corporate accountability activities. Through these efforts, we seek the establishment of a culture where no human rights violation goes unpunished, leading to reduced lawlessness and impunity in the country.

Responsibilities:

The Programme Lead is responsible for devising, with the Director of Programmes, a dynamic, impactful programme in the area of serious violations and international crimes that supports accountability and transformative justice in Libya.
