Clinical research epidemiologist (H/F) At Epicentrum


Founded by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in 1986, Epicentre conducts field epidemiology, training and medical research activities in support of MSF’s humanitarian objectives. We have 3 research centres in France, Niger and Uganda and we have outsourced’ epidemiologists. Our fields of expertise cover infectious diseases (malaria, TB, HIV, cholera, Ebola..), neglected diseases (leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis…) and the chronic diseases in the African countries such as diabetes and cancer are booming.

Under the responsibility of the Director of the Research Department, the epidemiologist is responsible for (e) the development and monitoring of research projects, including clinical trials.

1. Research activities

  • He/she identifies relevant issues, documents them and translates them into research question. He/she ensures a scientific and bibliographical watch and integrates recent knowledge into the Epicentre research agenda.
  • He/she contributes to the construction of the Epicentre research agenda in consultation with the Medical and Operational Departments of the various MSF sections, MSF working groups, Epicentre epidemiologists, etc, directors of research bases in Uganda and Niger, international partners and the director of the Epicentre Research Department.
  • As a project manager, in collaboration with the other researchers and support staff, he/she :
  1. drafts the study protocol, builds the budget, contributes to the development of partnership agreements, researches the agreements of ethics committees, etc,
  2. coordinates the implementation of the study and supervises its implementation – in partnership with MSF teams, national and international partners involved, and,
  3. analyzes data, interprets results, writes reports and articles, communicates results to MSF and at scientific conferences.
  • He/she provides regular reporting on the progress of studies for which he/she is responsible to the Director of the Research Department, and, from MSF and possible external donors – in collaboration with the financial controller.
  • He/she participates in the revised budget.
  • If necessary, he/she searches for additional sources of funding and prepares the response to relevant tenders.
  • He/she participates in meetings of specialists at national and international level and of the MSF working group or other bodies dealing with the research themes on which he/she works.
  • He/she develops and maintains a network of professional relationships and contacts.

2. Other activities in epidemiology

  • He/she may be required(e) to carry out short missions in the field (1 to 6 weeks). These missions include investigations for the’investigation of’ epidemics, rapid assessments of the state of health of populations in emergency situations, the implementation and evaluation of epidemiological surveillance systems, etc, evaluation of health programs.
  • He/she prepares mission reports in a short time and publishes the results in scientific journals, if applicable.

3. Transversal activities

  • He/she participates in the exchange of information and know-how within Epicentre: organization of seminars, student supervision, international communications, participation in the development of the’Organization of the Research Department.
  • He/she teaches epidemiology and clinical research or intervenes on infectious pathologies of’ interest for Epicentre during training sessions in the field or as part of university courses.
  • He/she represents Epicentre within the MSF sections and with other national or international scientific and academic institutions.

Qualifications

Experience

  • Experience in research in the field of infectious and tropical diseases for at least 5 years; experience in the field of malaria would be an advantage
  • Experience in conducting clinical or operational research projects in resource-limited countries for at least 5 years, leading to publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Professional experience with MSF and/or another NGO would be an advantage

Knowledge & skills

  • Master’s degree in epidemiology or university doctorate (preferable) in epidemiology or public health
  • Doctorate in desirable medicine
  • Autonomy in conducting applied research projects
  • Common french and English
  • Excellent ability to communicate orally and in writing
  • Mastery of the office pack, remote collaboration tools and statistical analysis software such as R or Stata
  • Strong ability to work as a team in a multicultural environment
  • Willingness to travel 1 to 3 months a year, sometimes in a very short time.

  • Gross annual compensation 58.4k€ over 13 months ; 25 days of paid leave ; 22 days of RTT, health insurance, 50% refund of public transit ticket, etc, Titles restaurant d’a face value of 11,00 € (supported at 60% by Epicentre).
