The Center for Victims of Torture (CVT) and the Psychosocial Care Center Corporation (CAPS) is seeking a consultant to carry out intensive capacity development for CAPS psychosocial staff.

The Psychosocial Care Center Corporation seeks to enhance the capabilities of people, social organizations and communities that allow the reconstruction of vital projects at the individual, family and collective level from a perspective of enforceability of rights. CAPS is a Colombian non-governmental organization created in 2002, which specializes in psychosocial care, support and training from a bioenergetic, holistic and comprehensive perspective. CAPS provides psychosocial care – individual and collective – to people and social organizations with psychosocial effects derived from the socio-political conflict in Colombia. CAPS is an active part of national and international platforms that fight against torture.

Purpose and scope

With the support of the project “ Helping Survivors Heal ” of the Center for Victims of Torture (CVT), the Psychosocial Care Center Corporation-CAPS is in the process of expanding and strengthening its psychosocial model. To this end, CAPS seeks to involve a series of experts in the field who have relevant experience in contexts and populations similar to those with which CAPS develops its action. These experts will provide intensive training, consultation, and materials development that will contribute to the expansion of CAPS psychosocial care delivery. Consultants are expected to provide training and consultations in person as well as remotely. This may take the form of a residency with CAPS (1-4 months in duration) or regular in-person visits over a longer period.Consultants are expected to carry out care activities with people previously identified by CAPS. In addition, consultants are expected to document basic theoretical and practical guidance and / or training of trainer materials to contribute to the institutionalization of learning. And that they can extend their training processes with other work teams that CAPS identifies as relevant actors for the development of their work.

Work description

  • Conduct an assessment consultation with the CAPS psychosocial team to gain an in-depth understanding of the service context and population, as well as CAPS guidance and theoretical approach.
  • Propose a capacity development program, including training and consultation, for the CAPS psychosocial team.
    • Include schedule, modality of each component (in-person or remote) and development of the material.
    • This is expected to be an ongoing process, involving CAPS staff and the CVT clinical advisor.
  • Carry out capacity development in CAPS, adjusting to contextual demands.
  • Develop a documented guide that will allow for ongoing training of new CAPS staff on concepts, interventions, and other practices, to contribute to the institutionalization of the material.
    • This may take the form of a manual, guidance note or training of trainers material.
    • Finalization is expected to be an ongoing process, involving CAPS staff and the CVT clinical advisor to ensure that the material produced is appropriate and easy to use.

Time frame:

  • September-November 2024 / February-April 2025

Contract requirements:

  • Comply with agreed work guidelines.
  • Attend the coordination and design spaces for activities to be carried out.
  • Regular consultation with the CVT clinical advisor.
  • Periodic consultation with CAPS management.
  • Travel to the CAPS office to work in person.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of the information collected.
  • Prepare documentation for training materials.

Required experience:

  • Experience in providing quality psychosocial support at the individual, family and community level.
  • Experience in proven psychiatric care in contexts of socio-political violence.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting organizational capacity development in psychosocial support.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing institutional guidance or training materials.
  • Experience working in intercultural environments.
  • Spanish proficiency
  • Familiarity with the Central and South American context, including socio-political factors and community initiatives.

Preferred experience:

  • Previous experience working with international organizations serving survivors of torture, conflict, or other serious human rights violations.
  • Advanced degree in psychiatry or equivalent experience.

Location and travel required:

This work will be carried out mainly in person in Bogotá, Colombia, although it may include periods of remote work.

Job description

  • Hold an evaluation meeting with the CAPS psychosocial team to gain a deep understanding of the context and population with whom CAPS works, as well as the orientation and theoretical approach of CAPS.
  • Design and propose a capacity development program through 5 workshops for the CAPS psychosocial team.
    • Include schedule, modality of each component (face-to-face or remote) and development of the necessary material for training.
    • This is expected to be a constant process, involving CAPS staff and CVT clinical advisor.
    • Conduct a minimum of 3 trainings with a group of health professionals.
  • Follow up in practice on the training carried out, accompanied by CAPS professionals as a training space.
  • Develop a documented guide that will allow the continuous training of new CAPS personnel on concepts, interventions and other practices, to contribute to the institutionalization of the material.
  • This can take the form of a manual, guidance note, or training material for trainers.
  • Completion is expected to be a constant process, involving CAPS staff and CVT clinical counsel to ensure that the material produced is adequate and easy to use.

Time period:

  • September to November 2024 / February to April 2025

Required experience:

  • (5) years of experience in providing quality psychosocial support at the individual, family and community levels.
  • Professional degree in psychiatry with (10) years of proven psychiatric care in contexts of socio-political violence.
  • (2) years of demonstrated experience in developing organizational capacities in psychosocial support.
  • (2) years of demonstrated experience in preparing institutional guidance or training materials.
  • Experience working in intercultural environments.
  • Spanish domain
  • Knowledge in the context of Latin America, including socio-political factors and community initiatives.

Preferred experience:

  • Previous experience working with international organizations that care for survivors of torture, conflict or other serious human rights violations.

Location and trip required:

This work will be carried out mainly in person in Bogotá-Colombia, although it may include remote work periods.
