Project Context and Scope

The Media and Communications Unit (MCU) of IOM is comprised of experienced communications professionals based in Geneva and Manila.

The team provides advice and support on media and public information issues to IOM Headquarters and missions worldwide. It is responsible for direct media relations with UN-accredited Geneva press corps and others, administers IOM’s global social media accounts and website and manages content submitted from around the world to be published on those global platforms, oversees institutional branding and initiates and manages global information campaigns. MCU produces a wide range of print and audio-visual materials for a variety of audiences to enhance understanding about IOM’s work and its position as the leading UN agency in the field of migration., and to advocate on behalf of the rights of migrants worldwide.

Under the direct supervision of the Brand Manager, the Graphic Designer Associate will provide graphic layout and design support services to assist in the creation of visually appealing content in relation to IOM brand’s initiatives.

MCD (Department Media and Communications – Brand unit).

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

Tasks to be performed under this contract

The consultant will have the following duties and responsibilities:

  1. Develop creative and eye-catching designs that align with the IOM brand style guide.
  2. Create visual materials, such as infographics, illustrations, banners, posters, and social media graphics.
  3. Collaborate with the Department of Media and Communications to understand the objectives and messages of various campaigns.
  4. Produce campaign-specific visual materials that effectively communicate themes and key points.
  5. Utilize design elements and layouts to tell compelling stories through visual content.
  6. Refine designs to ensure they meet the communication goals and resonate with the target audience.
  7. Maintain consistency in visual branding across all materials.
  8. Collaborate closely with the Brand and Graphic Design Manager, to gather project requirements and understand the context of each assignment.
  9. Provide timely delivery of design projects to meet campaign schedules and communication deadlines.

Performance indicators for Evaluation of Results

  • Ensuring all outputs are aligned with IOM brand style guides.
  • Delivery of any asset on the expected deadlines.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education, experience and/or skills required

• University degree in Graphic Design, Graphic Arts, or a related field, or a college diploma supplemented with additional one to two years of experience.

Experience

  • Portfolio demonstrating design mastery (mandatory).
  • Experience working with intuitional brand guidelines.
  • Experience in working on all aspects of branding: typography, color palettes, photography, and illustration.

Skills

  • Good sense of visual composition and a good eye for design and typography.
  • Good knowledge of print and digital industry standards.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and expertise in creating compelling visuals.
  • Creative and self-motivated mindset with the ability to work and provide regular feedback independently.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with the Unit and colleagues from different cultural and professional backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate flexibility/adaptability, organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task.
  • Excellent knowledge of Adobe Creative software (Illustrator, Indesign, and Photoshop).

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish. All staff members are required to be fluent in one of the three languages.

For this position, fluency in English and French is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, and Spanish) is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

The consultant must adhere to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Data Protection Principles (IN/138) and maintain confidentiality.

The consultant will be responsible to follow IOM writing guidelines and latest glossaries in all given assignments for accurate translation.

Competencies will be assessed during a competency-based interview.

  • The appointment is subject to funding confirmation.
  • Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and background verification and security clearances. Subject to certain exemptions, vaccination against COVID-19 will in principle be required for individuals hired on or after 15 November 2021. This will be verified as part of the medical clearance process.
