CONTEXT :

African Parks is a non-profit conservation organization that takes full responsibility for the rehabilitation and long-term management of national parks in partnership with governments and local authorities local communities. We currently manage 22 national parks and protected areas in 12 countries, covering more than 14.1 million hectares: Angola, Benin, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, etc, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Sudan and Chad.

The mosaic of Chinko ecosystems, at such a latitude on the African continent, makes this area incredibly rich and unique in terms of biodiversity. The Chinko Conservation Area (CCA) is an important area for endangered flora and fauna, as well as a vast ecosystem with complex interactions. It is the only protected environment managed in the remote eastern part of the Central African Republic.

More recently, a “functional landscape” approximately 64,645 km2 has been designated by the government of the Central African Republic to give APN the mandate to develop a comprehensive conservation strategy and land use plan. This landscape will need to be protected.

PRESENTATION OF THE POSITION :

African Parks – RCA, committed to the protection and rehabilitation of the CHinko Conservation Area in the Central African Republic, is looking for a (e) Landscape Transhumance Manager who will be responsible for the co-development and implementation of the transhumance strategy.

KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

The main roles and responsibilities of the position are :

  • Engage with pastoralist representatives in the main pastoral localities in the east of the Central African Republic and organize workshops to define Chinko’s approach to sustainable pastoralism and conservation ;
  • Conduct forward-looking field missions to Sudan and South Sudan to meet pastoralist actors and inform the strategy of trends and dynamics that are misunderstood today – with scrupulous respect for pastoralists african Parks standard operating policies and procedures (POS) for safety when travelling in sensitive environments ;
  • Analyze current working methods, data collected and results achieved through the current outreach approach of TANGO interns and externs and provide guidance to strengthen the strategy ;
  • Participate in the education, training and information meetings of TANGO staff prior to deployment, and, debrief the teams when they return from the field and analyze the data collected to inform the strategy ;
  • Support, monitor and guide awareness teams deployed in the large periphery of the conservation area, evaluate the results obtained and, based on the analysis of the context, extend the approach to the areas concerned, in particular in southern Darfur, Sudan ;
  • Supports all actions necessary for APN to be registered and operational RCA and in particular at L’EST. Communicate with the AFN leaders in South Africa and coordinate a common global strategy to enable APN to work in Chinko in the East of the CAR for the purpose of raising awareness and training.
  • Work with the Chinko sustainability team and government officials in the livestock, agriculture, agriculture, agriculture, agriculture, and, land and environmental planning to shape and develop transhumance corridors with the necessary facilities (signalling, water points, veterinary points, etc.).
  • Represent the Chinko conservation area in national and regional meetings on transhumance and pastoralism if necessary, and develop/maintain positive relationships with stakeholders ;
  • Liaise with colleagues of the Regional Information and Coordination Center of the Garamba National Park with relevant information and analysis of dynamics, including, and maintain the exchange with the RICC team in Chinko and Garamba if necessary and possibly Chad ;
  • Participate in relevant exchange missions, where appropriate, in other parks facing transhumance problems in CAR and throughout the Sahel region to share successful approaches.
  • Provide logistical support to ensure that all TANGO teams are equipped before the transhumance season ;
  • Contribute to the update of Chinko’s five-year business plan on pastoralism and the development of transhumance corridors and sustainable pastures
  • Perform any other related tasks assigned to it.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE :

  • At least four (4) years of experience in the field of pastoralism, prior experience in the field of conservation in protected areas is an advantage ;
  • Graduate degree in anthropology, agriculture, livestock, biodiversity conservation, rural development or other related fields of study ;
  • Excellent oral and written analysis and communication skills in english and french; the ability to interact in fulfulde, arabic and sango is an asset.
  • Experience working in unstable places, in compliance with safety procedures, is an asset ;
  • Initiative, perseverance and resilience ;
  • Previous experience of life in Africa and willingness to live in an isolated environment with regular field missions ;
  • Have a good team spirit and experience working with multicultural teams.
