How many World Heritage Sites are there?

As of January 2023, there are a total of 1,157 World Heritage Sites located in 167 countries around the world. These sites are recognized by UNESCO for their outstanding universal value and represent some of the most significant cultural and natural heritage sites on the planet.
Of the 1,154 World Heritage Sites, 900 are cultural sites, 218 are natural sites, and 39 are mixed sites that combine both cultural and natural significance. These sites include iconic landmarks such as the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids of Giza, and the Taj Mahal, as well as natural wonders such as the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Serengeti National Park.
The World Heritage Sites are selected based on strict criteria that assess their cultural and natural significance, as well as their integrity and authenticity. Once a site is inscribed on the World Heritage List, it is protected and managed by the international community to ensure its preservation for future generations.
